George R.R Martin has taken the fantasy genre with it's roughly established rules and ripped them asunder. This continuation of the game of thrones delves into the gutter politics of Kings Landing, the betrayals and intrigue.

He continues with the perspective based chapters and touches upon a number of the characters from previous books. But, as he admits in the appendixes, he did not have enough pages in this volume to deal with more than a few of them. If you are expecting to see detail on John Snow, Arya or even Tyrion, you will be disappointed, but what happens to the other characters more than makes up for this delay.

It is a gripping book that keeps the pages turning and it opens the stage for book 5 in this series with some fantastic ground work. And on the plus side, you can actually pre-order book 5 from Mighty Ape now as well and hopefully have it somewhere in October or November 2009.

"A slow but crucial volume in the Song of Ice and Fire"

“A Storm of Swords” was an incredibly hard act to follow for George R. R. Martin. As a result, “A Feast for Crows” is a tad disappointing. The volume features half of the series' main characters, thus some of my favourites were absent. This is because Book 4 runs concurrently with Book 5, “A Dance with Dragons.” This book is slow at points, and features many ho-hum chapters. However, it remains a crucial addition to Martin's Song, and has some brilliant highlights, including the introduction of some cool new characters. A Song of Ice and Fire was bound to stumble eventually – this is where it happened. Given the brilliance of the series, however, that is no real bad thing; “A Feast for Crows” still bests many other fantasy novels out there.

"Not bad, but not the best"

Although I am a huge fan of the series, reading this one took almost 4 times as long as reading the other books in the series, because, quite often, it just wasn't as exciting as the other ones. Whilst there are some highly entertaining parts, they are too few, and very far between. I could not help but feel it is just nothing more than a lead up to A Dance With Dragons, but I agree, it is a necessary one.

Description

This work continues the most ambitious and imaginative epic fantasy since “The Lord of the Rings”. Bloodthirsty, treacherous and cunning, the Lannisters are in power on the Iron Throne in the name of the boy-king Tommen. But fear and deceit are in the air: their enemies are poised to strike. The Martells of Dorne seek vengeance for their dead, and the heir of King Balon of the Iron Isles, Euron Crow's Eye, is as black a pirate as ever raised a sail. Across the war-torn landscape of the Seven Kingdoms, Brienne the Beauty (thus named in mockery of her great size and strength) seeks for Sansa Stark, having vowed to protect Sansa from the wrath of Queen Cersei, Tommen's power-hungry mother. Meanwhile apprentice Maester, Samwell Tarly brings a mysterious babe in arms south to the Citadel from the cruel frozen north where the sinister Others threaten the Wall! “A Feast for Crows” brings to life dark magic, complex political intrigue and horrific bloodshed. Against a backdrop of incest and fratricide, alchemy and murder, victory may go to the men and women possessed of the coldest steel and the coldest hearts.
