J., began the manufacture of locomotives in 1852, the title of its ownership then being Danforth, Cooke Company. The works were originally established about the year 1800, and for fifty years were engaged in the man ufacture of cotton and other machinery. Upon the entrance of John Cooke, who had previously been in the employment of Thomas Rogers, the manufacture of locomotives was begun. John Cooke may therefore be regarded as the founder of this establishment as a locomotive-works. The present organization is John S. Cooke, president; Frederick W. Cooke, vice-president; William Berdan, secretary and treasurer; and Charles D. Cooke, superintendent. The original shops in Paterson have recently been abandoned to other uses, and new and completely modern shops have been built with a capacity of 180 locomotives per year.
