Update to Banana Points Changes

By Che

Since the announcement last week about the retirement of our Banana Points program we've received a lot of feedback from you all. We have received many messages and comments from people who were pleased with the change. We also received many messages from customers who weren't so pleased. We've taken all of your feedback on board and have come up with some adjustments to our plan to address this.

There were some common themes among the criticisms that we received. Mostly people were concerned that their Primate subscription would go to waste if they didn't get to choose when the subscription started, and many customers expressed a desire to receive vouchers or account credit instead of Primate. We have discussed these issues below, and the action that we will be taking.

“Can I choose when my free Primate subscription starts?”
This is a great idea that would allow you to make the best use of your free Primate subscription. We have adjusted our plan to allow for this. From May 28th customers who qualify for a Primate subscription (excluding Trade Accounts) will be given the option to convert their remaining Banana Points balance into a Primate subscription at a date of their choice until 31 December 2019. If you are an existing Primate customer you will still need to convert your Banana Points to Primate by 31 December 2019, your subscription will be extended by the period determined by your Banana Points balance. You will have until 31 December 2019 to activate your Primate subscription, all outstanding Banana Points will be written off after this date. This means that you can activate your Primate subscription when it's most convenient to you so that you can make the most of its benefits.

To activate your Primate subscription simply go to the Banana Points page in your account and then click on the Activate Primate Now button (see example image to the right). Your Primate subscription will be active immediately.

“Can I have free vouchers or account credit instead?”
We understand that vouchers or account credit would be an attractive offer. Banana Points were never intended to have a dollar value attached to them and we'd never be able to offer a meaningful dollar amount in exchange for Banana Points without putting our business in jeopardy. Unfortunately offering vouchers or account credit is not an option.

Banana Points will be converted to Primate subscriptions using the following rates:

  • 200,000 Banana Points: 1 year Primate subscription
  • 55,000 Banana Points: 3 months Primate subscription
  • 700 Banana Points: 1 day Primate subscription

As a thank you for your feedback and understanding, when you activate your free Primate subscription you will also receive a bonus 7 days on top of your converted Primate duration. This will ensure that you all have plenty of time to make use of your Primate subscription.

e.g., if you have 80,000 Banana Points you will receive a Primate subscription for 3 months (55,000 BP), plus an additional 35 days (25,000/700 BP), and a bonus 7 days when you activate your subscription. The remaining 500 BP will be written off.

Login here to check out your current Banana Points balance. Visit our Primate page to find out more about the benefits of Primate membership.

  • Ta'i says: 16 May 2019, 3:20pm

So 67, 895 points.. 3 months and 25 days is enough time to do some damage to my wallet lol

Hi Debbie, 52,000 Banana Points will convert to 74 days of Primate. You'll also gain an additional 7 days when you activate your Primate subscription.

Would have loved to have seen the Banana Points program be used for something like Giveaways. Kind of similar to your usual Facebook giveaways, just slightly reducing those and having a "Banana Points Draw" where you can buy entries for Banana Points, and actually give back to the people who are buying products, not just following online for a handout :P

    All interesting information.
How do I redeem my points for Primate? Or is it automatic?
    (Or have I missed something?)

  • Timothy says: 16 May 2019, 3:35pm

so i have 7842 is that equal 11 days worth?

  • Victoria says: 16 May 2019, 3:35pm

You guys decided to use my idea! That's awesome. Thanks, Mighty Ape!

Really frustrating to see a company do this to their loyal customers. Bad business model to make maximum profits while neglecting your customer loyalty reward system for years then basically tell them it all means next to nothing in the end.

@Sam - So I gather you'd prefer them to leave it as a Lanyard or an iPad screen protector for another 7 years?

Eh, 'Primate' is just free shipping with Saturday or signature free. It's not really worth it for someone like me. Who doesn't order every week. I would rather see it maybe more akin to EB Games system where it can offer you discounts on goods. It's a mild improvement.

Great that you're trying to do something to address this but still so disappointed. I am a primate member (and have been since I discovered it) I dont want money off it. It's already something I do... my banana points were meant to be about something different.

  • susan says: 16 May 2019, 4:55pm

I only have points cause there was only crap to use them on and now I have to use them on a primate subscription what if I never shop at mighty ape again I lose what I've been saving up hoping for something good... sad

  • Rachel says: 16 May 2019, 5:11pm

Awesome idea, had completely forgotten about the banana points lol

  • Carl says: 16 May 2019, 9:20pm

14854 banana points. i have asked about the broken system for ages, and was guaranteed that in the first quarter of 2019 a overall was coming....and this is it...just remove it, i dont want to be a primate member, i have no need for that. as others have said this feels like a cheat, i have always used Mighty Ape when possible to support local business, and this is the response, this is the reward. you must understand there will be many of us seeking to use other platforms now that you have shown us what we are worth.

  • Grant says: 16 May 2019, 9:35pm

There better be more items available to spend the points on between now and the end of the year! Use this as an opportunity to clear stock!

  • Rebecca says: 16 May 2019, 10:01pm

How much would I get for around 30,000 points? Also will you be putting anything else to be brought with the points until you stop it?

  • Joe says: 17 May 2019, 9:10am

Thank you for listening to feedback both positive and negative. Been a customer for a number of years and only became a Primape last year (subscription actually ends a week before the conversion haha) if I wasnt already going to renew it I'd be super happy with the free upgrade. Free shipping and upgrades really does make a difference.

How do I activate a Primate subscription using banana points???

  • Grant says: 19 May 2019, 9:11am

Great idea. My primate renewal is due today which I normally do for a year for a free month. Do I need to wait to renew until after 28 May to get the further benefit? Also, if renewed now can the points still extend when the subscription will not have expired by 31 Dec 2019?

  • miriam says: 19 May 2019, 7:14pm

Thank you for listening to the concerns of your customers and changing what you can to help us. This new version of the BP change is more accommodating for those who would need the flexibility of when to activate the primate period and so we can plan to utilise it the best we can. Thank you again Mighty Ape ?

  • Brian says: 19 May 2019, 7:23pm

Basically nothing's changed since there is still no fair way to use your points.

  • Lesley says: 21 May 2019, 5:07pm

Yeh, it sounds fair to me, I will take the primate deal!! Thanks Lesley

  • Helen says: 23 May 2019, 1:55pm

Out of curiosity, have you got any stats on the banana points out there, like what the biggest stash is or something?

  • Anthony says: 24 May 2019, 12:04am

94570 banana points here. Been a Primate member since day one. Been a super loyal customer for many, many years. Primate subscription is one subscription im happy to pay for everytime.

From the comments it seems that many people have been expecting to be able to buy a Ferrari with their meagre banana points balances. Get some realism into your lives, folks! MightyApe already provides a great range of products, at very competitive prices, with fantastic customer service, and your money stays in NZ (unlike many competitors). What more do you need?

  • Kathleen says: 28 May 2019, 5:01pm

Thanks for changing it so we have more time to convert. Don't suppose I get anything extra for being probably the only person in nz to actually buy something with banana points? Lmao
