Sid Meier's Pirates! for Xbox will include a Vs mode and will take advantage of many Xbox Live! capabilities, high fidelity 5.1 Dolby Digital surround and will support HDTV.
Now it's time for Sid Meier and Firaxis Games to bring this exquisitely rich, action-adventure game into the 21st century. An entirely new game engine will deliver updated gameplay, stunning new features, spectacular 3D graphics and enhanced surround sound, so players can fully experience the intrigue, adventure and danger of life as a pirate on the Spanish Main. In Sid Meier's Pirates! you take the leading role of a Pirate Captain in the 17th century Caribbean amassing fortune and fame in an attempt to seize your rightful place as one of the most revered (and feared!) pirates in history. Test your skills as a sea captain exploring the high seas and exotic ports in a richly detailed 3D world. Overtake the enemy and seize valuable booty. Exchange plank-shattering broadsides in fierce naval battles, and engage in duels with worthy opposing captains. As your reputation and skills grow, so will the size and quality of your crew, and your ability to take on larger enemy ships, raid and plunder heavily fortified ports, and locate ancient treasure. There's a whole cast of interesting and dangerous characters to meet, mysteries to solve, exotic island destinations to discover, and powerful alliances to forge! The new Sid Meier's Pirates! carries on with the great gameplay and design simplicity tradition of the award-winning original while adding more challenging and exciting battle options, and a deeper and more varied role-playing experience, including multiple paths to a wealthy, happy retirement. This and many other features and additions make this gaming classic one of the most highly anticipated releases of this century! Features: Related News

"Out of date"
As this is supposed to be an update of an old classic, I had expected it to be, well, up to date. But alas, I was to be bitterly dissapointed.
The music and sound FX are terrible, the graphics mediocre - a poor showing considering the power of modern machinery. The game play isn't bad, but it's extremely limited. Despite the open endedness of the environment and variety of mission types (ship vs ship, turn based strategy land attacks, sneaking into towns, duelling etc), i found myself quickly bored by this game's repetitiveness. For example, there are only a handful of animations which are used to show the outcome of actions (sword strokes in combat, NPC encounters etc), and I got sick of seeing the same ones fifty times an hour. In short, this game is pretty fun at first, but it wears pretty thin pretty quickly
"Lotsa Fun Arrrghh!!"
Pirates makes a nice change in my library FPS, Drive Sim, and RPG games.
You take the role as captain of a ship during one of four selectable eras ranging from 1600-1680 The main story sees you chasing information for your lost family members and eventually the whereabouts of Evil Marquis De la Montalban. However there is so much in the game you may find yourself setting your own goals and totally ignoring the main plot. Essentially, Pirates combines a series of mini-games, ranging from swordplay to dancing and attacking towns to ship combat to form a fun and entertaining game as a whole. The graphics are bright and colourful and the characters seem to be larger than life. Sneaking through a stream of FPS and Driving Sims, Pirates is a light-hearted romp that hides many challenges, creating great replay value.
