Set several years after Lightning and the others saved Cocoon, some survivors have decided to start over by rebuilding on Gran Pulse. Reviews
“Square Enix should be commended for addressing Final Fantasy XIII's problems and for once again delivering a fun and highly playable RPG glowing with visual beauty and saturated with simple but universal sentiments. Nevertheless, the improvements feel less weighty than they might have–mechanical triumphs in a game that feels less than the sum of its parts. You won't perform awe-inspiring summons as a matter of course, and the ending–well, the ending isn't likely to leave you with the sense of closure you might want. Yet the monster collection and time-hopping freedom alone are enough to make it worth embarking on this enjoyable adventure.” Gamespot
“Story gripes aside, Final Fantasy XIII-2 is just hands-down better than Final Fantasy XIII. It has more replay value, a more compelling battle system, an open world, an innovative exploration premise, and much more. If Final Fantasy XIII's laundry list of flaws turned you off to the Final Fantasy franchise, then Final Fantasy XIII-2 will get you back in.” Cheat Code Central
“Final Fantasy XIII-2 proves itself the better game, but it lacks the same focused storytelling employed in the original. It benefits from an improved battle system, open environments, and an overall level of polish that deserves a nod of respect.” 8/10 Great. IGN
IGN RATINGS FOR FINAL FANTASY XIII-2 (X360)
7.0 Presentation
Extreme polish in almost all user systems. Organized menus, clear tutorials, and
a fun sense of humor. Story only reaches emotional clarity at the conclusion and
offers no closure.
8.5 Graphics
Eye-catching characters and colorful worlds. Not quite as impressive as when the
original launched in 2010, but still full of personality and an ample usage of
pink and purple.
9.0 Sound
Excellent voice work from the actors behind Serah and Noel, with solid
performances from the rest of the supporting cast. A great soundtrack with more
vocals than most Final Fantasy games to date.
8.0 Gameplay
Fast battles supported by a fun monster collection system. Still fairly easy for
the JRPG experienced, though the new focus on exploration lends much to the
package.
9.0 Lasting Appeal
Tremendous post-game content, considering you can beat the main quest with about
40 of the 160 collectible memory fragments. Easy to return to the world and
continue fighting after the credits roll.
8.0

Great
(out of 10)
Not a game for people that aren't fans of the FF series. However if you are, this is just more of the stuff you enjoy. I played through FFXIII despite the negative reviews and really enjoyed it and so far I am enjoying this just as much if not a bit more. 8/10
Ability to save anywhere.
Lots of mini quests
Easy to level up
Catch monsters and have in your team.
Tells like a movies series
What an excellent return to form for Final Fantasy. Personally I liked XIII too but the general feeling was it was too linear. This game changes that. It's a completely new game with all sorts of new features. It's full of side quests and non-linear maps. They changed the battle system by having two main characters (one NPC from XIII and a new character) and a third battle partner being a captured and enslaved mob. (Yes like pokemon… but still awesome). The story is as complex as XIII and follows on from that so you will find it easier to follow if you played through XIII first. If you want a good JRPG this has to be right up there on your list.
This game is amazing. On the xbox it looks beautiful and it is a good next step from the last game.
First things first, I liked the first game. It had its faults, but it wasn't horrible like many claim. However it's because of this, this sequel is crippled from the get-go.
Things this game improves on, like non-linearity early on, side-quests, and a (somewhat) branching plot – these are things those who complained about the original would probably love. However because of the original, they are likely not to buy this game. The maps/areas are expansive, loads of things to explore, and more so when you jump between eras. The side-quests give things to do between or during plot points, and even give you CP/EXP for your trouble.
The battle system has been slightly altered, but still has some elements that bother me a little. You can fine-tune the Paradigms, or swap leader mid-battle or when another dies, and those are nice things. What bothers me is the retaining and reliance of “Auto-battle”. I love the application of the ATB system in this and the original, but if you want to survive or get 5-star ratings on battles, you're going to need to use Auto-battle (or have fast thumbs). This removes half the sense of control or strategy, leaving you simply to keep hitting auto or swap roles when needed.
The plot – though time travel is a nice concept to play with, if like me you've played the Chrono games, watch Doctor Who, or seen Steins;Gate, you'll be familiar with many chronological concepts. You're going to need to put those aside, as this game treats the time travel elements are a more magical force and mystical quality that works more on Narrativum than casualty. However you could almost forgive this, as it pulls the game closer to Final Fantasy than Final Sci-fi.
Overall if you didn't hate FFXIII you may be cool with FFXIII-2, and if you wanted to see improvements, they're here. The game is also shorter, with my playtime being somewhere around the region of 45 hours, instead of 120 hours.
