Description

In the future, Earth's appetite for resources has become a major motivator for deep space exploration. Immense, privately-owned and operated mining ships called "planetcrackers" orbit planets and use sophisticated equipment to carve out entire city-sized chunks of rock, and reduce them to component elements and raw ore.

Communications with one of these planetcrackers, the USG Nishimura, have ceased while the ship is engaged in deep space mining operations.

The company's top engineer, Isaac Clarke, is sent to discover the problem and fix it. Once onboard the vessel, Clarke discovers that a terrifying alien presence has taken over the ship, and has horribly killed the crew. Weaponless and terrified, this lone engineer is burdened with much more than simple survival-- he holds the fate of all mankind in his hands.

Features:

  • Dismemberment - This game's core mechanic is the strategic dismemberment of alien appendages. In true survival horror fashion, you must conserve ammo in true Hollywood horror fashion, it's all about seeing bone fragments and arterial spray fly across the room.
  • Note: Enemies in the game are resilient. The conventional wisdom that a headshot will stop an alien is thrown out in Dead Space
  • Setting and atmosphere - Dead Space is an immersive, interactive horror movie experience. An emergent, panic-inducing audio system, an innovative Minority Report-style HUD, and a nuanced, scary pace that will sink you into the game experience
  • Unique weaponry - Stasis gun is used to slow charging aliens and to help solve puzzles. The gravity gun and unique projectile-based weaponry are mining tools
  • your ability to upgrade weapons increases as you progress through the game
  • Zero gravity - Survive and destroy the aliens in zero G environments. Manipulate gravity with Havok physics to solve puzzles and fight enemies.

5 stars "EA finally releases something amazing!"

Dead Space could quite simply be the best game to come out of EA in a very, very long time.

The attention to detail, sound, pace of action and overall scare factor are not to be missed. The studio has taken it's time to make sure that the story is well told, including Dead Space: Downfall on Blu-Ray and DVD, the prequel to the game, and downloadable Animated Comics on Xbox Live.

There are many trailers and video footage, that you can download or watch on both Xbox Live Marketplace or Gametrailers.com, which should quell any discouraging thoughts about the atmosphere and attention to detail that EA has put into Dead Space.

Reviewers have had problems releasing their reviews on time, not due to the fact that the game is overly difficult but because it scares the living daylights out of them!

So if you're looking for a game that will scare you but leave you wanting more then this is a must purchase for you!

5 stars "This......game......RULES!"

For all the fans of horror games out there, REJOICE!
This game is not only bloody scary (yeah yeah you hear that all the time from review sites, but I mean it, it is ACTUALLY scary) but it is also extremely well told.
The story is great and I recommend it to ALL survival horror games. I sat for 7 hours the past Sunday playing this game!
I haven't done that since the days of Fallout.

If you haven't already, play this game! You will not regret it.

4 stars "Resident Evil 4, meets System Shock 2, meets Doom 3."

Doom 3 because it suffers from Doom 3 syndrome… all the levels look alike.

It's obviously a very polished, quality game. And everyone's heard of the incredible atmosphere by now. But when you get past that it's actually kind of monotonous. You just plod through the very linear (and similar) levels, carrying out the little missions your captain gives you to find keys, repair or active machinery or whatever, allowing you to proceed to the next section of the ship where you do it all again. Blowing apart an increasingly horrific array of monster along the way.

What would have made it a bit more engaging for me is if you occasionally came across survivors that you could rescue or help out in some way. The interaction with other people would alleviate the monotony a bit and give you a sense that you were accomplishing something. The only time you come into contact with other people (aside from one or two plot characters) are the static-ridden transmissions from two other members of your crew, or hapless victims that you come upon just in time to see die.

You're not going to like it if you hate the type of games where monsters pop out of nowhere when you hit a certain spot on the map or complete an objective/hit a switch (Doom 3 again). Nearly one hundred percent of the encounters are like that.

It uses the checkpoint save system, which I hate. But it's one of the more forgiving games I've played (except for the end boss). The save points are quite frequent and it usually doesn't make you go back too far when you die. Also, the difficulty is very well balanced, being challenging without being ridiculously hard (with the exception of the annoying monster that you can't kill that makes repeated appearances).

The most interesting thing to me was the story, which is gradually unveiled by picking up logs left by the crew of the ship prior to their demise. But this was a bit of a let down too because when you finally learn what's going on it doesn't actually make sense.

I liked being able to upgrade my equipment and buy and sell stuff. This allows you to customise your character a bit, but the suits are all depressingly similar (and ugly) so you can't really do much about your look.

All in all it's good if you really dig the horror/suspense aspects, but the gameplay just isn't varied enough to keep my interest for more than an hour or two at a time.

And I hated the ending.

5 stars "Down Rite Creepy!!!!"

Dead Space, down rite scary, this game is one of the best “Survival horrors” ihave played in years.

All based on a isolated remote mining station in deep space you and a smaill crew arive, from the time you see the deep space mining ship you just know its going to be scary.

The whole atmosphere of the game is chilling and the cfreepy noises of “Something” lurking overhead in the air vents, just gets to you. The lighting effects are awsum and bring a sence of “your being watched” and let me tell you that feeling is absolutly rite.

The story is awsum and gets you involved, but enough bout the visuals and story, its the creatures in the game the “scared the S**T outa me, just wen you thinks its safe to open that door infront of you "BOOM” out it rips from a ceiling vent or a wal, even just being rite behind a closed door you about to foolishly open. Deffintly not for the faint hearted as this game will shock and scare you and leave you with the lights turned on and looking over your shoulder.

Roll on “Dead Space 2” as this instalment down rite rocks!!!!!!!!

5 stars "Awesome game"

I cannot see any reason to hate this game, 10/10 for me, graphics are insane at 1080p, really easy to get along with the story, absolutely freaky at the worst of times and the best ie. when your low on health it will throw hell and then some more at you. The log system is great, letting you keep track of whats been going on before and during your arrival. An all round great game!
