"this space sim is a winner"
5 stars"

Any gamer who, like me, spent hours and hours in front of Elite will love this game. This is finally a worthy successor, much more in the spirit of Elite than, say, Freelancer – where you are pretty much bound into the storyline if you want to get access to equipment and new areas of the game universe. In X-3 you are given complete freedom. There is a two or three stage training mission to kick the game off, and after that it's up for you to decide if you want to keep following the storyline, or turn into a merchant prince, a bounty hunter, a pirate … you can even build you own space factories and complexes of factories.

The universe is gorgeous, the flight model is pretty good – somewhere between inertia-less and Asteroids-like friction-less.

There is a certain role playing element in that you have standing with the different peoples in the game universe and to begin with some will hardly let you dock at their space station until you impress them, with trade (difficult if they won't let you dock, eh!) and by killing pirates or Alien Invaders in their sectors. Once they like you enough, you can even purchase(!) a law enforcement license, and you get paid for killing baddies.

The interface takes a little getting used to, and it's not really obvious that [enter] gives you a menu for the ship you're in, [,] a universe map and [.] a sector map and between these you can check prices, give commands to ships and play the whole game really. I bought the game off Steam when it wasn't available locally – and dodged the whole issue of starforce protection, but I got no documentation whatsoever, and the x-3 handbook (downloadable) really saved my bacon.

"Caution! please read" Purchased on Mighty Ape

The copy protection system used is Star-Force, which will not install on Vista / windows 7 correctly. But cause your computer to crash and not restart properly. (a auto windows repair program to run)

This can be avoided by doing the following… (from egosoft forum)

With the release of patches 2.x, X³ no longer requires the physical media nor Starforce in order to run.

If you wish to install X3 without installing Starforce, the procedure is as follows:

Install X3 1.3 from the CDs/DvD. Do not run the game!!!!!

Apply the 1.0 → 2.5 patch. Run the game.

This will prevent Starforce from installing unnecessarily, as it does not install until you run the game for the first time.

Find patch here… http://www.egosoft.com/…tches_en.php

"A win for the space race"
5 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

This game is waaaay better than X2: The Threat. Mostly because the missions in game are easier to think through and less tedious.

No more getting stuck for days on end looking for that one rock to blow up it's straight into combat and the situation keeps changing all the time.

Combat has taken a turn for the better as certain over-powered weapons have been toned down especially as new ones have been added. Also the Fabled “Special Building” that you can get in game is awesome. Now YOU can build the fleet instead of just flying to the nearest sector with a shipyard. What is this building you say- Buy the game or even google on the Egosoft forums since that alone will make you want to buy it. It makes me want the expansion (which is next week's purchas ^^)

Description

X³: REUNION continues to lead the way in offering players the ultimate open ended game play experience, backed by an addictive storyline and intense combat/trading action. Utilising the 'X³ Reality' engine, X³ pushes the graphical boundary to movie quality in-game graphics. TRADE in a new economy, dynamically reactive in pricing relative to supply and demand. FIGHT individual dog fights or command full-scale fleets against massive enemy armadas. Budding trade entrepreneurs can BUILD interconnecting factories to create huge space borne complexes, to truly mass produce commodities. THINK through a professional screen-written story line, to unravel the destiny of the galaxy.

  • X³: REUNION engine utilizes the very latest DirectX 9 graphical technology; pixel shader technology is used to create realistic reflections across a variety of surface types, while bump maps and specula maps add detail to the geometry of objects
  • A freshly developed economy system allows for more imaginative ways to conquer your foes via commerce. Functions using established business models of 'Elasticity of demand', 'Economies of scale' and 'Return on investment'. Factories are constructed by non player characters, which can freely trade; wars in sectors affect the universal economy, while opportunities bring challenges to both novice and experienced players.
  • Over 200 newly designed models have been created for X³. Star ship detail has been massively increased; over 10 times greater than the previous game at an average of 25,000 polygons per ship
  • A new graphical user interface prevents less screen obstruction and faster access to all game options.
  • Completely redesigned X universe, with new high detailed environments including asteroid fields, dense gaseous nebulae's, star ship graveyards and much more. Players can fly much closer to planetary bodies; where space stations can hang in low planetary orbits.
  • A multitude of new technologies and weapons systems, make the player even more devastating in combat; multi threat targeting system allows for numerous targets to be pin pointed simultaneously.
  • Controllable via joystick, keyboard and mouse cursor; all are fully re-mappable giving the player infinite choice over control layout, which can be stored as custom profiles
