Description

During the summer of 2003, Baylor University men's basketball, on the rebound after several lean years and expected to compete for a berth in the NCAA Tournament, was devastated. It endured the murder of a team member by one of his teammates, a cheating scandal, and an almost total disintegration of the program. It was the biggest scandal in college basketball history. As the co-captain of that team and the only senior player to remain at Baylor all four years, author Matt Sayman lived through the pain and loss, the introduction of new coaches, the tough NCAA restrictions, all this coupled with the horrendous media pressures. And his teammates looked to him, a 21-year-old kid, to answer the tough questions the world was asking and to put a calm face on what was truly chaos. Through tragedy and scandal, Sayman and his teammates learned the value of believing in each other and giving maximum effort, earning the title of "the little team that could". That team of leftovers laid the foundation that year for others' future success, and went toe-to-toe with some great teams along the way. It is a well-chronicled story that garnered extensive national and even international coverage. But the real story of what it was like to live in the eye of that hurricane is even more powerful than the sound bites played on ESPN or the matter-of-fact newspaper stories, and is told through the only first person account of the key player who lived through it.
