Funny thing about reviews, is that everyone has a different point of view, what I like, may not be what the next dude is looking for, that said the parallels with FOTR are there in tone and pacing, and over all structure if you like the Ext rings movies, you will like this one also.

About the movie
This 2012 epic fantasy adventure film is directed by Peter Jackson and the first installment of a three-part series based on the book The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien. It will be followed by The Desolation of Smaug (2013) and There and Back Again (2014). The three films together are prequels to Jackson's Lord of the Rings film trilogy.
A younger and more reluctant Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, sets out on an unexpected journey to the Lonely Mountain with a spirited group of Dwarves to reclaim their stolen mountain home from a dragon named Smaug. Bilbo Baggins is swept into a quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers.
Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever … Gollum. Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of guile and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum's “precious” ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities … A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to …

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Movie Reviews
“Charming, spectacular, technically audacious… in short, everything you expect from a Peter Jackson movie. A feeling of familiarity does take hold in places, but this is an epically entertaining first course…Peter Jackson's return to swords, sorcery and beards deserving of their own postcodes is fantasy how it ought to be.” Total Film
“I'm holding the filmmaker responsible for getting us all back again – to feelings of excitement and delight. Vital as they are, Gollum and Bilbo can only do so much to keep us enchanted. Is Jackson able to sustain the magic in two more installments? I peer into Tolkien's Misty Mountains and embrace the journey.” Entertainment Weekly
“As epic, grandiose, and emotionally appealing as the previous pictures, The Hobbit doesn't stray far from the mold, but it's a thrilling ride that's one of the most enjoyable, exciting and engaging tentpoles of the year.” The Playlist
“The Hobbit plays younger and lighter than Fellowship and its follow-ups, but does right by the faithful and has a strength in Martin Freeman's Bilbo that may yet see this trilogy measure up to the last one. There is treasure here.” Empire
“During the run-up to this film, my anticipation level was hovering at a flat zero…The irony? I'm a huge Rings guy, with Jackson's original trilogy lodged firmly in my top ten list of all time…It took all of five minutes for my cynicism to dissolve into a vapor of Hobbiton's finest pipe smoke. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is my favorite film of 2012, in a year that saw both Marvel's The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises. Not too shabby, especially if you subscribe to my film genre worldview, which if you don't you really should. I was surprised and delighted by my return trip to Middle-Earth, proving once again that Peter Jackson was made for building experiences in this world. Or for making movies about vomit-eating alien fast food entrepreneurs. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is great for many reasons, but the big one is how seamlessly it fits within the overall big-screen Tolkien framework. This is a decidedly lighter film than any of the previous three, with more honest-to-goodness levity baked into its runtime than the entirety of its heavy duty successors. And yet Jackson deftly balances this lightheartedness with explicit hints of doom that waits on the horizon. Gandalf knows something is up in the world of Sauron and this suspicion drives his quest with the dwarves. ..” DVD Verdict
“Jackson has made The Hobbit with brio and fun, and Martin Freeman is just right as Bilbo Baggins: he plays it with understatement and charm.” Guardian UK
“This film stands ably on its own, offering up generous piles of large scale fantasy underscored by genuine emotional heft and boundary-pushing visuals.” Flicks.co.nz
“Even though this installment is mostly a prelude, Jackson's eccentric mixture of low humor, earnest foreboding and digitally processed pageantry is consistently engaging and immersive.” Time Out New York
