"Great graphic adaptation of the book"
5 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

I enjoyed reading The Hedge Knight. I was fortunate enough to read the series of books (Hedge Knight, Sworn Sword and Mystery Knight) before getting on with Dance of Dragon, and I find that this spin off series (or whatever term you would prefer) adds a lot to the main series, with a certain cross over of characters and a great deal of depth added to Westeros' history. I knew jack s**t about the Blackfyre Rebellion, and about as little about the Targaryen's before the Mad King, and this book clarifies a great deal.

Regardless, the Hedge Knight is only the first in the series, but this graphic novel did well to translate the book in my opinion. Though I don't think I can recommend a graphic novel over the books in this case, I am very happy with the purchase and will likely buy the rest of the books in the series as they come out.

TL;DR: Great visual adaptation of the book series, which is fantastic for fans of the ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ series. It won't kill much time, but is a great addition to the experience. Recommended to read the series before reading A Dance of Dragons.

Description

In this comic book/graphic novel adaptation set one hundred years before the events in George R.R. Martin's epic fantasy series, A Song of Ice and Fire, The Hedge Knight chronicles a young squire as he travels the cruel and complex path to knighthood in the Seven Kingdoms. Shouldering his fallen master's sword and shield, Duncan (or "Dunk") is determined to reinvent himself as a knight in a nearby tournament. But first Dunk needs a sponsor, and that requirement sends him down a road studded with friends, foes, adventure, and hidden agendas. One such friend is Egg, who becomes Dunk's squire, yet even he may hold secret motivations of his own. In this gripping prequel, Dunk and Egg seek glory in a world both familiar and new to Game of Thrones fans. What the two fortune seekers encounter, however, is a world of distrust and political machinations. Chivalry is not lost while Dunk holds fast to his dreams of honor. But such outdated virtues make him a target--and they may even lead to his ruin. This vivid and elaborately wrought tale brings new dimension to George R. R. Martin's beloved world. This edition includes fifteen pages of new supplemental material: sketches, character designs, and original pages by Mike S. Miller, plus variant and original covers.

Author Biography:

George R.R. Martin sold his first story in 1971 and has been writing professionally since then. He spent ten years in Hollywood as a writer-producer, working on The Twilight Zone, Beauty and the Beast, and various feature films and television pilots that were never made. In the mid '90s he returned to prose, his first love, and began work on his epic fantasy series, A Song of Ice and Fire. He has been in the Seven Kingdoms ever since. Whenever he's allowed to leave, he returns to Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he lives with the lovely Parris and two cats named Augustus and Caligula, who think they run the place.
