This is one of my favourite films, and hearkens back to early sci-fi when the psychological impact of technology on the human race was a central theme. Surrogates is somewhat let down by its action scenes, which seem over-the-top compared to the thoughtfulness of the underlying material. This is a detective film, a terrorist film, an us-vs-them film, and a film that asks what it means to be human. It's not a perfect film, but it's well worth watching. Don't expect a typical Bruce Willis actioner, though. This is one of his most thoughtful and understated roles, and he plays it with a fragility not often seen in his other work.
