Wickedly funny (hey, a fast-talking camp robot & his Harpo Marx styled non-talking pal) & action-packed this is a space-set fairy tale complete with princess, wicked villain & dull kid who must become a hero with a little help from a tiny green Merlin-styled teacher. It's got trite religious undertones for the spiritually inclined (May the 4th be with you) & even a bit of deep Oedipal psychology in terms of the father / son conflict - but more than that it's got light sabres! It's got the ultimate twist in episode 5 (Darth Vader's his WHAT???!!!) & it's got... Han Solo! Yup - the pirate movies of George Lucas' youth are perfectly captured by former Carpenter Harrison Ford as Indianna Jones of the future. Even better - all the tinkering of the special editions actually doesn't harm these amazingly entertaining movies - it just helps keep them looking fresher & more fun than ever. If you thought the ultimate family movie was THE WIZARD OF OZ you're wrong - like a fine wine or smelly cheese - STAR WARS just keeps getting better with age & watching it helps keep a big smile on the face of your inner child's immature imagination.
