Once again Scorsese has created a master piece. Shutter Island is fantastically directed, and subtly brilliant film. The plot is brilliant (no surprises there for anyone who read the novel – worth reading if you haven't, I think it's even better than the film). The acting is, well, also brilliant. di Caprio is great as Teddy Daniels, and Ben Kingsley, well he's perfect as Dr. John Cawley. The tone of this film is perfect. The subtle hints at the reality of the plot, of Asheclliffe Mental Hospital, of Teddy himself, are executed with mastery and precision.

There's not much more to say, except buy it, and experience it yourself. 5/5.

Description

Shutter Island

It's 1954, and up-and-coming U.S. marshal Teddy Daniels is assigned to investigate the disappearance of a patient from Boston's Shutter Island Ashecliffe Hospital. He's been pushing for an assignment on the island for personal reasons, but before long he wonders whether he hasn't been brought there as part of a twisted plot by hospital doctors whose radical treatments range from unethical to illegal to downright sinister.

Teddy's shrewd investigating skills soon provide a promising lead, but the hospital refuses him access to records he suspects would break the case wide open. As a hurricane cuts off communication with the mainland, more dangerous criminals “escape” in the confusion, and the puzzling, improbable clues multiply, Teddy begins to doubt everything – his memory, his partner, even his own sanity.

Critic Reviews:

  • " A relentlessly chilling mystery and a white-knuckle thriller. " – Mike Massie
  • " Mark Ruffalo breaks away and serves up what may very well be his best performance to date. " – Richard Propes
  • " Part gothic horror and part Hitchcockian nightmare, Shutter Island is bold, atmospheric and hugely entertaining. " – Nikki Baughan
