5 stars "Must have for an Atlus fan"

Similar combat to that of SMT: Nocturne (Lucifer's call), but involves no actual summoning, instead it's more like a final fantasy game with unlimited customization of skills. Don't take it lightly though, winning involves learning and overcoming weaknesses and resistances, so be wary if you're not a fan of challange. That said, it is probably the most suitable title to introduce yourself to the MegaTen franchise.

5 stars "Best Megaten ever"

SMT: DDS has one of the most complex and twisting plots I've ever played, with references to several religious and psychological schools that will keep your mind working overtime. Like all Megtens, DDS is set in a post-apocalyptic city where rival gangs guard their territory jealously while trying to figure out what's going on.
The combat, like SMT: Lucifer's Call, is turn-based with press-turns but it has been tweaked to allow the 5 playable characters to either morph into their Demon forms or stay in human form and use their guns. Like Lucifer's Call in combat an extra turn is gained for hitting an enemy's weakness and one is lost for hitting a strength.
All the characters are well developed and each have their own distinct personalities, combat strengths and weaknesses and ways of coping with the plot-twists.
The soundtrack is excellent, ranging from soft music to heavy metal, but whatever is playing it's always appropriate.
SMT: DDS1 draws the player into an intriguing world, with well layered inhabitants and strange events and sets the scene nicely for the finish in DDS2.

Description

With his four companions, Serf, the main character and a member of a tribe called Embryon, sets out for Nirvana, a land that can only be reached by the champions of Junkyard. They devote themselves to fighting against the never-ending resistance mustered by other tribes.

In the midst of chaos, a mysterious object, the Pod, suddenly appears. Countless spheres of light are emitted by the Pod and infect Serf and his comrades, awakening their demonic powers. An unimaginable battle unfolds within their faint conscience. They develop a desire to tear the flesh and shatter the bones of their enemies, who have also been transformed. Their instincts tell them to devour every being in their path. Until then, Serf and his comrades only knew of battle, but for the first time, they experience new emotions.

At that time, a dark-haired girl, Sera, comes to their rescue. Although she does not know where she came from, she holds a strange power - the power to control the party's demonic transformation. They receive orders from the Church of Karma to head for Nirvana, and they are accompanied by the dark-haired girl. "They who reach Nirvana first shall be recognized as the champions of Junkyard." The struggle intensifies, and they discover that the girl holds a key to the mystery. But, true fear still awaits Serf's party…
