Jacques Audiard has a gift for uncompromising, gritty, good news stories. The fairy tale endings of two of the three films I've seen of his don't jar as they might with a less skilful director. This isn't my favourite of the three – his first film, Read My Lips, remains the best of his I've seen. This one is nonetheless pretty good and pairs a solo dad whose cachet is martial arts with an amputee who trained orcas till the accident. And it does work out.
Put in charge of his young son, Ali leaves Belgium for Antibes to live with his sister and her husband as a family. Ali's bond with Stephanie, a killer whale trainer, grows deeper after Stephanie suffers a horrible accident.
