"The wit of Pterry"
5 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

Sir Terry Pratchett's wit and humour really shines in this, the fortieth discworld novel. The characters are funny and at times touching, and it's always a pleasure to see how Vetinari's little machinations turn out in the end. Full of little in-jokes just waiting patiently to be spotted, this was an absolutely fabulous read.

"PTerry at his best"

How could it be anything other than 5 stars-

Terry Pratchett is a fantastic author and this is another fine book penned by him.

"A new direction in Discworld"
5 stars"

This book could be considered a Lipwig book or a Vimes book and no Discworld collection shall be complete without it although it does not read as “fresh” as the earlier works. With the introduction of new technology, Discworld fans will certainly notice a change in the culture of the world. This needn't be a bad thing but it can distract a little. Raising Steam is a bit wordier than previous Discworld books too. It's difficult to say whether this is an influence of Sir Terry's ghost writer (don't forget, the gent can't write purely on his own anymore) or whether it's intentional. Some of it is explained away later, and I didn't find this potential “ghost interference” as bad as in Unseen Academicals. It does feel a little as if Sir Terry is trying to fit a few more things into his world in a hurry.

Description

To the consternation of the patrician, Lord Vetinari, a new invention has arrived in Ankh-Morpork - a great clanging monster of a machine that harnesses the power of all of the elements: earth, air, fire and water. This being Ankh-Morpork, it's soon drawing astonished crowds, some of whom caught the zeitgeist early and arrive armed with notepads and very sensible rainwear. Moist von Lipwig is not a man who enjoys hard work - as master of the Post Office, the Mint and the Royal Bank his input is, of course, vital...but largely dependent on words, which are fortunately not very heavy and don't always need greasing. However, he does enjoy being alive, which makes a new job offer from Vetinari hard to refuse...Steam is rising over Discworld, driven by Mister Simnel, the man wi' t'flat cap and sliding rule who has an interesting arrangement with the sine and cosine. Moist will have to grapple with gallons of grease, goblins, a fat controller with a history of throwing employees down the stairs and some very angry dwarfs if he's going to stop it all going off the rails...
