5% of people buy Operation Flashpoint: Red River and Homefront Resist Edition ~ PS3.
The pros: 1. Extremly realistic representation of war.
2. Much easier to get to grips with compared to Operation Flashpoint: Dragon
Rising (it seems like you can actually hit something this time out),
3. Nice story if taken with a pinch of salt.
The Cons: 1. The story seems a bit “hollywood” as the chances of a war
between two superpowers at this point seems extremly remote,
2. There is no characters of note! Characters are either a) incredibly cliche
or b) non existant,
3. The AI is a nightmare they suffer from serious mental problems. They sit
still while bullets whip up the ground around them and in some cases charge
blindly forward with no regards to either cover or incoming fire. Worst of all
are the ones who seemingly freeze in their spawn points and are just asking for
a bullet in their brains.
4. The healing/respawning of team mates. Your squad mate takes a hit and they
start to bleed out. At this point you have to run over and patch them up. If you
dont and your squad mate does bleed out then he drops to the ground writhing in
agony until either you or a team mate heals him (its worth pointing out that the
other squad mates including the medic and the individual in question is not
interested in giving medical aid until this point). If that fails and no one
reaches him in time then your squad mate is dead and is of no more use to you…
Until he magically respawns and the next checkpoint. This seriously impedes
taking this game as the realistic portrayl of war it attempts to be.
In conclusion: Was it enjoyable- yes very.
Was it believable- Yes if you can ignore squadmate respawns and the awful AI.
Should you buy it- I think so at this point in time its excellent value for
money. Your dollars could do a lot worse.
Once again Mighty ape has delivered me a great game at a very good price.
I enjoy “real life” military type games and reading the reviews of OF:RR convinced me to get it (especially at the discount price, cheers Mighty Ape). Pleased I did.
Unlike other games in this genre, RR, needs you to think like a military team leader. “Will the enemy try to flank us-” “Where is the best place to ambush-” “Where are my lines of fire-” etc. Nothing more enjoyable than “shooting & scooting” your team towards an enemy and finally succeeded in your task or holding off a determined enemy counter attack. RR offers great fun to those who enjoy thinking about tactics.
As team leader of a four man fire team you have to keep an eye on your team through a command system which doesn't take too long to get the hang of. Unfortunately the AI often take no notice of you, which can be annoying.
There are some niggles with the game: the errant AI, the long “re-spawn” re-loading when you do get killed, some ‘unclear mission objectives’, quite a LOT of adult language( a bit over the top really) but overall I am really enjoying it.
Not for everyone, it's not CoD or Battlefield, but rewarding for those who enjoy tactical play.
I love this game. I have played through it 5 times in less than a
month!
The look and feel of the game is awesome and the realistic gameplay is
very cool.
I found this game really enjoyable. Having to think about situations instead of running around holding the trigger button was a good change from other games
