IL-2 Sturmovik: Birds of Prey is based around large-scale aerial combat over the ground-based military operations of World War II. Players participate in the war’s most famous confrontations piloting fighters, battle planes or heavy bombers across a range of thrilling missions. There are five seats of war to engage in - The Battle of Britain, Stalingrad, Berlin, Sicily and Korsun - representing the main airborne battles of World War II in Europe.
As well as advanced environmental visuals enriching the game play, IL-2 also boasts an all new damage effects engine. Players can see real time damage to the aircraft such as holes in the wings and trail lines during dog fights. Hundreds of airplanes taking part in air battles is a distinguishing feature of IL-2 Sturmovik: Birds of Prey and the unique environmental engine also produces highly detailed, realistic landscapes that allows players to see a brand new simulation of ground support actions.

"Arcade flight sim"
Had IL2 on my PC, excellent game, Unfortunately for PS3 this has been so stripped back of features it is now an arcade game. Fun for a short while.
"Flight sim with guns...."
A basic flight sim type game but with guns. WWII plains, Dog Fights and bombing raids got to love it. Graphics are bit hoe hum but in all not a bad game.
"Intense, huge and fast paced"
About time someone brought out a WWII flying game that actually feels realistic. The missions are huge, the graphics are fantastic (towns actually look like towns with buildings and trees etc), and the AI is challenging. The aircraft all look amazing, and the damage model is SICK. Online play makes for something a bit different as well. Gameplay has something for everyone, and its refreshing that you actually have to dogfight into a firing position and not just lock and fire missiles. If you love old school planes and find WWII interesting, you need this game.
"awesome but ..."
Fight on all fronts, but only as Allied forces.
You can fly German aircraft on single missions, but not in campaign mode.
For me it is one of the best PS3 flight combat sims out there, ranging from arcade mode to realistic to actual simulator mode.
Endless hours of flying fun and when you up for it (and finished the campaigns on arcade) go to harder mode, where limited fuel and ammo gives you the more realistic feel of back then.
Sadly for me though, no axis campaigns available
