This is the first time I've based a review on a demo and only the second time I've rated a game 5 stars, I hope this doesn't come back to bite me when I've completed the whole game. Some how I don't think that's likely.
You play the survivor of a crash at sea that finds his way to the underwater city of Rapture. Your help is enlisted by a resident trying to escape with his family who in return assists you by means of radio communication in staying alive and negotiating the labyrinth that is Rapture.
From the first cut sequence you are grabbed by a claustrophobic tension that doesn't let up.
The battles take place between you and a myriad of nightmarish residents, robot sentries etc all suitably sinister enough for some genuine frights.
The weapons system is easy to use and variable features of the game are too numerous to mention and as familiarity from playing the demo is limited it would be inappropriate to comment fully suffice to say that if this doesn't satisfy the most fickle of gamers I'll be very surprised.
This game looks great. The presentation is amazing and it gets away from the “down corridors” game play that FPS's are known for. The haunting '30s music sits perfectly with the art deco environment the game is set in.
As I've mentioned this review is based on the playable demo. Barring cataclysmic disasters you can expect an experience unlike any other game. This is one hell of a ride!
If your wondering, the only other game I've given 5 stars to was Resident Evil 4 which suffered a few minor flaws but was otherwise ground breaking. This so far looks like the bar has been yet again lifted and the game gets 5 stars ‘cause there aren’t 6.
There's been lots written about this game and with good cause. It is simply brilliant. Stunning visual quality, rich, detailed, smooth running with a soundtrack in keeping with the high quality production. Gameplay is easy to master with lots of helpful tips and hints if you want them. Spend time marvelling at the detail. The water effects are the best I've seen, and so they should be given this game is set under the ocean.
This is an awsome game , amazing storyline and great game play too . You can play through the game in many different ways and will have to make some decisions as well . Can't go wrong with this game . Superb .
Let me begin by saying that I did play this on the Xbox 360 but i could not resist the temptation to buy it again on the PS3 and give it another shot with the new features this game has on offer. BioShock is nothing short of spectacular. It\'s not only in a league of its own in terms of genre and storytelling in video games but it also manages to pull off one of the most rewarding experiences in any form of electronic medium. To say BioShock is a good game would be a massive understatement – BioShock deserves every penny it racks in and is a milestone achievement in video gaming.
If you like horror, thriller or gothic titles then you\‘ll be right at home with BioShock. It manages to string together all kinds of genres to form something that is truely unique. If you own a PS3 then i\’d highly recommend you pick up this title. It\‘s as every bit as entertaining as it\’s 360 counterpart and with the extra features and DLC you\'d be crazy not to. A worthy Game of the Year in 2007, and will give the best a run for their money in 2008.
possibly one of the best games of recent years…you will be captivated from start to finish. if you had any doubts, they will be crushed, mangled, burnt, drilled, electrocuted and slaughtered like the multiverse of carnage in the game…with an awesome captivating storyline witha major plot twist at the end…i reccomend the pc version as there is more control but overall a 10 out of 10. buy it, you wont regret it
Had played Bioshock 2 before buying this, and wow it's even better! A gaming masterpiece
I loved the quick delivery, and am very pleased with the game. Keep up the good work!
This game is great with elements of horror/survival added to an fps rpg create a great blend of styles in a capturing story
This has 2 be the best first person shooter I've ever played, the graphics and story line are supreme. I would recommend this game to any new player as i'm sure any others would to.10/10.
Very well done to the makers
Have this game on PC and the PS3 version didnt let me down. This is just as good as the PC version, it was the same game but way more fun for some reason. Looking forward to the 2nd game coming out. Its still gets me with scares and is loads of hours of fun. Its a great buy.
Just playing this at the moment, having somehow never owned or hired
before......
Even in late 2009 it is something a little bit special – and can play in the
creamy delish of 1080p :)
I agree that, like many classics, these titles can intimidate and then as soon as it starts and you are underway (after about a five minute loading screen – eh!?) it's the ol' “Oh right, of course, it is actually awesome – should have known”…
Great controls, depth etc… although I find the hint system irresistable, when some may not like using it, but will find not doing so pretty mind-bending… so that's my only caveat – if it is even one to begin with as I like the hints personally…
I am only a small way through too – but suspect the ‘twist’ has already been telegraphed… so I may be wrong there, but treat the twist as a 16 and under thing, lol!! Personally, I don't trust the guy on the communication speakers… and I am not killing the girls. We'll see how that plays out at the end :)
5/5 /
9.7/10
I bought this game about 2 weeks ago off Mighty Ape, OMG I loved it so much. Not only does this game hold the power of a first person shooter; but it mixes in a fantasy aspect to give the game a great spin.
Bioshock will keen you in suspense until the very last part where it takes a great spin and you will be like “OMG”. 9/10 awesome game.
‘Would you kindly’ buy this title an try it out, well worth it
I'd like to add a couple of comments to my first review now that I've
completed the game. Please note I've tried to avoid spoilers but may give away
some features of the game in this additional review.
As the protagonist you are lured into the ever evolving story of Rapture. If you
are a novice or are put off by games with lots of control features don't be
concerned with Bioshock. You are given ample oportunity to master the features
of the game, however featuress such as hacking the robot sentries or various
machines can be circumvented by buying the hack if you've got enough money.
I completed the game with out actually hacking once. So if you like the
challenge hack away or if you're lazy like me buy everything out. I still
finished with a full wallet. This is a very complex game made very user
friendly. Even the real nasties the “Big Daddys” can be eaily dealt with
through a combination of electro shock treatment and exploding buck shot. You
can use genetic mddifications (plasmids) or conventional weapons or both.
You also have the oportunity to be bad or good. I played the game the first
time as a good guy and got such a warm fuzzy at the end it brought a tear to my
eye, (almost).
The thing most noteably absent is the frustration that
plagues many other games. (see the irritating button mashing sequences in Resi
4). The designers have created a game that allows experienced gamers a rewarding
experience while letting the novice have a hell of a lot of fun. If I have to
make any criticism it would be that, in my opinion, it would benefit from carry
over features such as may be seen in “Resistance of Man” when replays unlock
alternative alien weapons.
This game is a corner stone not only in first person shooters but all action
games in general. It is the first time I've actually exclaimed out loud on
completion "Damn that was good)
Bring on Bioshock 2!
