5 stars "RTS at it's very best!"

Supreme Commander is one of those games that really changed the way i think about the RTS genre. Before, i was quite happy to play the small scale skirmishes that were found in the Command and Conquer series. But since playing this i have found hard to go back to playing on such small areas. The fact is that Supreme Commander's maps are huge! with the biggest maps stretching across an area of 81×81 km square. This allows for never-before seen possibilties in tactical warfare, as you stretch out across the map, setting up surveilance at choke points, building strategic weapons of massive power and eventually bringing the full might of your forces to bear against your oppenent. The unit selection for each faction is quite diverse, though it appears to be quite well balanced.

Something you should keep in mind for this game though is that on average each campaign mission/skirmish can take many hours to complete. The game speed is quite sedate( even on the fast mode) compared to C & C or the frenetic intensity of something like Starcraft.

This is now the current benchmark for what I think a strategy game should be. I can't recommend this enough for RTS enthusiasts.

5 stars "Awesome!"

Anyone who played Total Annihilation, played it well and loved it should pwn playing this. Very, very similar with all the bells and whistles we waited 10 years (almost) for. Took me very little time to destroy the ai on supreme(hard) but lets get real, this game is meant to be played online for full enjoyment and the mass of different strats you can and should employ.
If you are into fast paced (depending on your own skill levels micro'ing) rts with infinite strats, this is for you. My advice is to really play it until you understand it and if you want to learn, use the replayer. Anyone who was anyone in TA learnt that the day the YankSpankers released the TA replayer.
Go hard. Win the infinite war!

3 stars "Incomplete, dont buy yet."

The engine, graphics, etc. all look great (albeit with high requirements) but the gameplay is nowhere near complete:
There is an overall feeling of not enough variation in the units and sides, the 3 campaigns are each only 6 missions long, the skirmish AI is awful, the touted feature of ‘Coordinated Assaults’ doesn't actually work.

The biggest reason not to buy this yet is that the tools that were supposed to be come with the game are nowhere to be found! The fan community is moving incredibly slowly and as of 25/Feb/07 there are about 5 custom maps and 3 unit mods announced on the web.

Seriously, don't waste your time trying to play this until they've patched it and the fans have released some decent unit packs. By that time it will probably even be cheaper :D
