Description
Updated to run under Windows XP/Vista.
Now it's time for Sid Meier and Firaxis Games to bring this exquisitely rich, action-adventure game into the 21st century. An entirely new game engine will deliver updated gameplay, stunning new features, spectacular 3D graphics and enhanced surround sound, so players can fully experience the intrigue, adventure and danger of life as a pirate on the Spanish Main. In Pirates! you take the leading role of a Pirate Captain in the 17th century Caribbean amassing fortune and fame in an attempt to seize your rightful place as one of the most revered (and feared!) pirates in history. Test your skills as a sea captain exploring the high seas and exotic ports in a richly detailed 3D world. Overtake the enemy and seize valuable booty. Exchange plank-shattering broadsides in fierce naval battles, and engage in duels with worthy opposing captains. As your reputation and skills grow, so will the size and quality of your crew, and your ability to take on larger enemy ships, raid and plunder heavily fortified ports, and locate ancient treasure. There's a whole cast of interesting and dangerous characters to meet, mysteries to solve, exotic island destinations to discover, and powerful alliances to forge! The new Pirates! carries on with the great gameplay and design simplicity tradition of the award-winning original while adding more challenging and exciting battle options, and deeper and more varied role-playing experience, including multiple paths to a wealthy, happy retirement. This and many other features and additions make this gaming classic one of the most highly anticipated releases of this century! Features:

"Yo-ho-ho and a pantsload of fun..."
Pirates sees you filling the floppy leather boots of a pirate captain during the ‘Golden Age of Piracy’, as you lay waste to the Spanish Main in the name of avarice, adventure, romance and revenge.
Joining either the French, English, Dutch or Spanish, you start your career as a talentless nobody in a rickety embarrassment of a ship. How you progress from there is largely dependent upon your skills as a naval tactician, a swordsman, a treasure hunter and a lothario. You initially start as a privateer, plundering the wealth-laden merchantmen of rival nations. However, once you’ve acquired a more formidable vessel, and a large enough crew, you can turn to piracy. The various mini-games do keep things interesting, and while the duels with enemy captains and the thunderous exchanges of cannon-fire are entertaining, the true challenges lie in wooing the Governor’s daughter and sneaking into enemy towns without being apprehended by the local garrison. The former relies on observation skills and reflexes, as you frantically attempt to follow the young lady’s cues during a formal ballroom dance. Perform badly, and your advances are promptly rebuffed. Perform well, and you may win an attractive and influential wife. The latter relies on stealth, speed and evasion, as you try to outwit and outmanoeuvre patrolling sentries. Should you be caught, your career as a pirate is significantly hampered as you languish in jail for months. Eventually, old age starts to take its toll, and you’ll find your reactions during shipboard duels not quite as swift as they once were. (Think of it as simulated arthritis.) Hopefully by the time you reach retirement age, you’ll have acquired sufficient wealth and influence to bow out in both style and comfort. A brilliant, if slightly repetitive game. Highly recommended.

"A magnificent re-release"
Pirates! on the Amiga is about the only game I've ever *seriously* been addicted to, i.e. playing all night until about 6am, then grabbing an hour's sleep and going to work ready to commit criminal negligence due to exhaustion!
It was with cautious joy I heard of the re-release, and counted down the days to its release. I can now confirm that the new version has all the playability and more of the original, and will not disappoint older fans of the game in any sense whatsoever. If you've not played Pirates! before and you like your videogames a little more cerebral than the ubiquitous FPS bullet-fests, then get your copy right now and get used to one hour's sleep a night!
"Sail the high seas"
Sid Meier's Pirates is a great game to relax and sail around the map or if your feeling like you want to destroy other ships just because you can then go ahead. There are some epic battles with enemy captains and other side quests to go on.
well worth a look ! =)
"outstanding addictive"
had heard of sid meiers first pirates but had never managed to get hold of a old copy to play it.I still love his alpha centuri game and even old as it is its still on my hard drive. This game will have the same fate. outstanding, simple to play but deep with plenty todo different ways to play it , and great fun.can be slightly repeating of incidents but a minor fault in a game that will be as talked about as the first sid meier and faraxis have not lost their wonderful touch
