Thousands of years ago, settlers exploring the far corners of space discovered a beautiful and resource-rich system that soon was dubbed "New Eden." Pilots, fighters, pirates and corporations swarmed the system, each jockeying for a share of the action. But when the wormhole that led to the system closed suddenly, the colonists' only route to Earth was severed forever. Following millennia spent in darkness, four dominant nation-states emerged, and today the world of New Eden seethes with both commerce and conflict. Craft your own epic story in EVE Online.

Pursue a career as an industrialist, trader, courier or smuggler. Experience the vastness of a world within a persistent universe where the dynamic economy is entirely player-operated. Choose from hundreds of skills as you build a character to suit your needs, and pursue your destiny in a world in which you are at the controls

4 stars "The sandbox MMO"

If there is one game that has a similar feeling to EVE Online it is the 1984 classic, Elite. No modern MMO has the same open scope and freedom that EVE has.

Do not come to this expecting to see yellow exclamation marks and to be guided from zone to zone as you level up.

You are taken through a reasonable tutorial which gives you the basics to get started; but then you are left free to roam in an open universe. It is that moment when you realise that you, the player, has to make your own destiny and that the game will not tell you how to make it that you come to understand why EVE is so different and loved by so many players.

Do you want to explore the universe? Be a combat pilot? Tear asteroids apart for their minerals? Be a trading mogul or the industrialist that converts whole planets into their factories? Do you want to fly a carrier, support ships or the massive Titans?

It is all there. And for you to decide.

The new character creator released with Incursions is fantastic, although options are still limited in places. The developers keep on updating and their future plans show a depth and level of thought that is to be appreciated.

Visually, well. There's not much to it. You see black empty space and your HUD. And some decent ship models. It does what it is supposed to do. Sound is alright and you can listen to your own music while playing.

This is a long term game though. Expect that you will sometimes need to spend days or weeks training a single skill (Training can happen offline as well) just to use an ability you want or fly a specific ship. Things take time and that is natural.

In fact, often when hauling cargo between the Hyabusai and Nabbanai corporations it pushes that feeling of a freighter pilot sitting in a cockpit with a tattered old paperback in hand, tumbler of whiskey on the console and another week of sweaty, unshaved flying ahead of you. That feeling it creates is part of the appeal.

Make no mistake though. This is a ruthless game. You need to leave a bit of your morality behind and show a willingnes to grab what you can get to get the most out of it. However, if you do it will reward you with the type of gameplay stories that become legend.

If you liked Elite or X-3, get this.
