Legends: Dinah Washington
A truly mesmerizing voice singing such a diverse range of songs…it could
only be Dinah Washington. In the 1950's some Jazz aficionados mistakenly
accused her of sacrificing her Jazz roots for commercial gain but the simple
truth was that, although Jazz would always be Dinah Washington's genre she
regularly experimented, with great success, with Blues, Gospel, Pop and
R&B.
Her versatility is astounding and she brought a sense of originality and
freshness to many old classics. She influenced some of the greats of music such
as Tina Turner, Diana Ross, Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin and Donna Summer
and as Quincy Jones (who produced Michael Jackson & Ray Charles) said
“There was never another singer quite like Dinah and I doubt there ever will
be again”.
