As anybody who likes Kingdom Hearts should know, all the games are good. Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep does not disappoint, though I didn't like it quite as much as I expected to.
In this game, you follow three stories, which you play through to the end, and they all connect. The good thing about this is that you can see how they all connect, and you play with three characters with different playing styles. For instance, Ventus is fast, but not that strong, Aqua is of medium strength and has more powerful magic, and Terra hits hard, but is slow and can be hard to use (for me anyway). The bad thing, I found, was that once you finish one story and move onto the next, you have to go through all the beginning worlds again, which can leave you bored and not wanting to play it as much. For me, the beginning three worlds didn't make me eager to continue the game. However, getting past that part, the game gets much better. It gets exciting, and a little more challenging, and the next worlds you visit are just more interesting.
The storylines are good, but I don't think they're quite up to the original KH's. Playing three doesn't seem as good to me as playing one large story, which is completely epic. It is Kingdom Hearts, so you can still expect a fairly good storyline, but I didn't like it quite as much.
The graphics are very good. I might go as far as to say this is the best graphical accomplishment on PSP. There is only one CGI cutscene, which is the intro, but it doesn't matter, because the graphics are good. That makes the game easier to play, although, graphics don't make a good game. They add to it, but they aren't all that important.
Music in the game is reused from previous Kingdom Hearts games. I liked the pieces which were reused. The intro music “Simple and Clean” from KH1 is put into use in the introduction of this game, and I like the nostalgia it gives. The best nostalgia I experienced in the game, though, was the reused, and made better, Radiant Garden/Hollow Bastion music. What would KH be without that world. Apart from that music, I didn't think the rest was all that great. I liked a few, but some music was slightly annoying.
Gameplay is easier than other Kingdom Hearts games. In fact, the whole game is easier. In difficulty of stories, I would rate Terra's as the hardest (by far) and Ventus's the easiest, by a long shot. An addition to the game, is possibly the most addictive and absolutely fun board game I have ever played. It's called the command board. I spent about a third of my game time simply playing on the command board, and experimenting with all the different boards. It's satisfying beating other characters, and you're rewarded with Level ups of commands. If you get this game, and I highly recommend you do, get into the Command board, and make yourself like it (I didn't originally) because it's very fun.
The biggest disappointment I had with the game, was there is only one Final Fantasy Cameo – Zack Fair. However, I can forgive this as Zack is one of the coolest Final Fantasy Characters ever, and he's well fitted into this game.
I spent many enjoyable hours playing this game, and only a few boring hours, and I recommend anyone who's a fan of Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy to get it.
