Hanussen

The final film in the trilogy of period films, after Mephisto [1981] and Colonel Redl [1984], starring the magnetic Brandauer as a doomed character at odds with the powers that be. Here he is an Austrian corporal wounded in the head during the First World War who, while being treated at a military hospital, begins to have presentiments of the future. Later, claiming to be a clairvoyant, he finds himself in great demand until he is arrested by members of the Nazi party, who are alarmed at his predictions. The film delves, with bitter irony, beneath the surface glamour to reveal the corruption that lurks below.
