"Final Fantasy back to the old formula"
5 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

What an excellent return to form for Final Fantasy. Personally I liked XIII too but the general feeling was it was too linear. This game changes that. It's a completely new game with all sorts of new features. It's full of side quests and non-linear maps. They changed the battle system by having two main characters (one NPC from XIII and a new character) and a third battle partner being a captured and enslaved mob. (Yes like pokemon… but still awesome). The story is as complex as XIII and follows on from that so you will find it easier to follow if you played through XIII first. If you want a good JRPG this has to be right up there on your list.

"Better than FF XIII"
4 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

Not a game for people that aren't fans of the FF series. However if you are, this is just more of the stuff you enjoy. I played through FFXIII despite the negative reviews and really enjoyed it and so far I am enjoying this just as much if not a bit more. 8/10

"An improvement but not perfect."

Purchased on Mighty Ape

The gameplay is much better than Final Fantasy XIII, but the story is pretty weak. But it is still very entertaining and a steal at the price.

"Time-Travelling Fun"
4 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

This game is fun! They listened to the fans and really delivered. It's different and by no means the same. Final Fantasy XIII-2 is great. You don't really need to play the first game to play this one: it has a option in the game for beginners of the franchise to revisit the storyline if you need to. Also, I like how when you go back to your game it has a “previously, on Final Fantasy XIII-2” like they have on TV. Shows. This means you don't have to get lost at where you are most of the times, which I often do after leaving the game for a long period.

"Improves much, but not all."
4 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

First things first, I liked the first game. It had its faults, but it wasn't horrible like many claim. However it's because of this, this sequel is crippled from the get-go.

Things this game improves on, like non-linearity early on, side-quests, and a (somewhat) branching plot – these are things those who complained about the original would probably love. However because of the original, they are likely not to buy this game. The maps/areas are expansive, loads of things to explore, and more so when you jump between eras. The side-quests give things to do between or during plot points, and even give you CP/EXP for your trouble.

The battle system has been slightly altered, but still has some elements that bother me a little. You can fine-tune the Paradigms, or swap leader mid-battle or when another dies, and those are nice things. What bothers me is the retaining and reliance of “Auto-battle”. I love the application of the ATB system in this and the original, but if you want to survive or get 5-star ratings on battles, you're going to need to use Auto-battle (or have fast thumbs). This removes half the sense of control or strategy, leaving you simply to keep hitting auto or swap roles when needed.

The plot – though time travel is a nice concept to play with, if like me you've played the Chrono games, watch Doctor Who, or seen Steins;Gate, you'll be familiar with many chronological concepts. You're going to need to put those aside, as this game treats the time travel elements are a more magical force and mystical quality that works more on Narrativum than casualty. However you could almost forgive this, as it pulls the game closer to Final Fantasy than Final Sci-fi.

Overall if you didn't hate FFXIII you may be cool with FFXIII-2, and if you wanted to see improvements, they're here. The game is also shorter, with my playtime being somewhere around the region of 45 hours, instead of 120 hours.

"They need to make it simply again"
2 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

This game is beautiful and all but it needs to be much simpler, I wish they would take the same game mode for what they did with X and X-2 and work that into this game. The live game is too much and just distracting at times.

"Exciting, fun, wrecks with your mind!"

If you've played XIII and enjoyed the story, then you'll love this – especially how the story plays with your mind.

Impeccable service from mighty ape yet again. Game wasn't exactly what I was expecting from a Final Fantasy game, but still good fun nonetheless.

"Yet another smash hit"
5 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

I had great hopes for this game, just like I had for the original title. Square Enix addressed nearly every issue from the previous title and delivered in a huge way. With a non-linear world, plenty of side quests, puzzles, and much more, Final Fantasy XIII-2 adds yet another smash hit to the RPG powerhouse.

"Not as terrible as the first one."
3 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

The first one was severely flawed however with the sequel, I was pleasantly surprised by the various changes that were made including with the way you travel. This game focuses on places in time, and finally Hope is actually is a decent character who makes his appearances in different time lines. The storyline makes more sense this time round than in the previous one I felt, although that being said, it did feel like it was incredibly short. I didn't buy this game at full price, ill just put it out there right now, I got it when it was on special, otherwise i honestly would never of given this game a chance. The ending sucked balls though though.
