"The best of the Sixth Doctor!"
4 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

Of the classic series, I consider the Sixth Doctor to be one of the most polarising of the Doctors. Putting aside the choice of wardrobe, his erratic behaviour, and the gaps in production during his tenure, it is pleasing to see his return (and ultimately his last televised performance as part of the series) in the form of this sweeping 14 part storyline, The Trial of a Time Lord. The Trial of a Time Lord begins with the Doctor being summoned to a space station, where he is put on trial for his actions. Throughout the series, various adventures are displayed as evidence to the prosecution's claims. The different adventures are tightly bound by scenes in the Courtroom, and the series concludes with a fantastic realisation. The Trial of a Time Lord was a joy to watch, with a more consistent production value and tightly woven story. Overall this is one of the most enjoyable classic sets of Doctor Who I have watched, and it's only a pity that it's story arc is so quickly wound up as the events leading to its conclusion were so elegantly explored and realised. Fantastic performances throughout, this is the Sixth Doctor at his best, and a testament to all that could have been. Although this was the last adventure of the Sixth Doctor, it is definitely a memorable one, and a fantastic set to own for fans of Doctor Who! Highly recommended!

"Pretty Marvelous"

Aside from most of the Big Finish stuff and Vengance on Varos (don't forget Timelash!) this fourteen parter, although camp (it is 80's DW after all!) is fun, and never boring, regardless of half enthusiastic extras and low budget, Colin shines in every scene

"Great and fairly typical story"

This series demonstrates the humour involved in all series of Dr Who. It co-stars the best incarnation of the Master prior to the present female incarnation. I recommend it as next best behind “The Key to Time” of the early series.

Description

This 14 part epic from 1986, Doctor Who Trial of a Timelord DVD Boxed Set, features the episodes – “The Mysterious Planet”, “Mind Warp”, “Terror Of The Vervoids” and “The Ultimate Foe” – that make up the Trial of a Time Lord storyline.

The 6th Doctor (Colin Baker) is on trial for his life. Plucked out of time and space by the Time Lords, he is charged with transgressing the First Law of Time. He must defend himself against the sinister prosecutor Valeyard…

The Mysterious Planet (Parts 1–4)
The trial begins as the Time Lords review an adventure from the Doctor's recent past. The setting is Ravolox, where the Doctor and Peri find themselves caught in the conflict between a warrior tribe, a pair of intergalactic con-men, and a god-like robot. But deep below the surface of the mysterious planet lie secrets that threaten the very fabric of the universe. And to protect them, drastic measures have been taken that will shock the Doctor to his very core…

Mindwarp (Parts 5–8)
The Valeyard's prosecution continues as he presents damning evidence of the Doctor's interference on the planet Thoros Beta. Dangerous experiments are being carried out there that could affect the future of all life, and they must be stopped. But why is the Doctor so determined to help his former enemy – the greedy, opportunistic Sil? And why has he turned against his companion, Peri? One thing is certain: someone will die..

Terror of the Vervoids (Parts 9–12)
In a desperate bid to clear his name, the Doctor presents his defence to the charges laid against him. In the year 2986, the starliner Hyperion III makes its way to Earth… but all is not well. The Doctor and Mel arrive in response to a distress call, although not in time to prevent a murder. And this will not be the only death: someone aboard will kill again and again to protect their secret. And while the murderer closes in above decks, in the Hydroponic Centre a terrifying new breed of creature is about to awaken…

The Ultimate Foe (Parts 13–14)
The Doctor has tried to prove his innocence, but the Valeyard is certain of his guilt and will stop at nothing to carry out a sentence of death. But there is a surprise witness waiting in the wings; one who knows the truth…With the trial in disarray, the Doctor flees into the Matrix to confront his enemy, into a nightmarish world of torture and punishment. Trapped within, he will have to fight for his life against the ultimate foe…
