My most vivid childhood memories of this series were of Lt. Paul Foster imprisoned in an alien space suit, drowning in green liquid, and those purple nylon wigs worn by the women on Moonbase. The green liquid was the stuff of nightmares, while those wigs resulted in an unfortunate hairdressing experience.
I have thoroughly enjoyed (and cringed on the odd occasion) re-watching the whole series again in crystal clear quality. The digital restoration is amazing – I wish more shows would follow their lead. The ‘science’, like the costumes, is not to be taken seriously, but the model work is still outstanding today.
It was excellent science fiction for its time, with interesting storylines, and it is still entertaining and watchable in 2009, although relatively slow-paced compared to present-day offerings. The added extras are a treat, and all in all a ‘must have’ for fans of Gerry Anderson's shows.
Take a trip down memory lane to the 70's. If you look past the slow pace of acting the plastic settings, you will see a great TV series for it's time. I have thoroughly enjoy watching the first episodes of the series, as I never got to see them when it first come on TV, so was good to know how it all begun, I now look forward to watching the rest of them.
I had long and distant memories of UFO, and never thought I would see it again. Luckily, after finding bits and pieces of it recently on YouTube, I thought, well, there must have been a re-release of it on video at some stage. I have to say I was surprised and delighted to find this complete boxed set on DVD, and clearer than I could have imagined. UFO was ahead of it's time and more, dare I say it, down to Earth than the likes of Star Trek and better construced than Dr Who. Mind you, I was in standard four at the time (11 years of age,) so it was like looking in to the future, (1970 looking in to 1980. Forty years ago, boy how time flies.)
Unfortuntely the acting is only slightly less wooden than the puppets of the thunderbirds and captain Scarlet. Having said that it's an interesting look back and some of the storys are interesting.
