Description
On October 15, 2007, activists around New Zealand woke to guns in their faces. Black-clad police smashed down doors, dragging families out onto roads. In the rural village of Rūātoki, helicopters hovered while locals were stopped at roadblocks. Operation 8 involved 18 months of invasive surveillance of Māori sovereignty and peace activists accused of attending terrorist training camps. How did the War on Terror become a global witch-hunt of political dissenters that reached our very own doorstep? Operation 8 examines how and why these unprecedented raids took place and at what cost to those targeted.

I was concerned before purchasing this that it would be another one sided rant that verged on conspiracy. How wrong I was! Seeing former Springbok tour ‘red squad’ leader Ross Meurant criticise police culture makes for fascinating viewing, but that's only after a series of reflections made by those directly affected by the raids. Whilst the filmmakers make no apologies for the perspectives offered, this film provides both a cogent critique of broadcast news and questions how the politics of ‘terror’ are played out in New Zealand.
Clever stuff and immensely watchable. It's left me thinking about what's going on in this country and who's really pulling the strings. And that's me who doesn't believe in conspiracies too…
