Uplifting comic melodrama set during the Hokitika Wild Food Festival that rises above its familiar story of two women who, in different ways, have missed out on motherhood. Quirky country-town setting and distinctive New Zealand-ness could easily have lapsed into kitsch Kiwiana but stuff of substance, humour and poignance instead prevails. Alison Bruce is excellent as Magik.
