Description

Oskar, a 12-year-old fragile and bullied boy, finds love and revenge through Eli, a beautiful but peculiar girl he befriends, who moves into his building.   When Oskar discovers that Eli is a vampire it does not deter his increasing feelings and confused emotions of a young adolescent.  When Eli loses the man who protects and provides for her, and as suspicions are mounting from her neighbors and police she must move on to stay alive.  However when Oskar faces his darkest hour, Eli returns to defend him the only way she can.

Review

"The enduring popularity of the vampire myth rests, in part, on sexual magnetism. In Let the Right One In, Tomas Alfredson's carefully controlled, yet sympathetic take on John Ajvide Lindqvist's Swedish bestseller-turned-screenplay, the protagonists are pre-teens, unlike the fully-formed night crawlers of HBO’s True Blood or Catherine Hardwicke’s Twilight (both also based on popular novels). Instead, 12-year-old Oskar (future heartbreaker Kåre Hedebrant) and Eli (Lina Leandersson) enter into a deadly form of puppy love. The product of divorce, Oskar lives with his harried mother, while his new neighbor resides with a mystery man named Håkan (Per Ragnar), who takes care of her unique dietary needs. From the wintery moment in 1982 that the lonely, towheaded boy spots the strange, dark-haired girl skulking around their outer-Stockholm tenement, he senses a kindred spirit. They bond, innocently enough, over a Rubik's Cube, but little does Oskar realize that Eli has been 12 for a very long time. Meanwhile, at school, bullies torment the pale and morbid student mercilessly. Through his friendship with Eli, Oskar doesn't just learn how to defend himself, but to become a sort of predator himself, begging the question as to whether Eli really exists or whether she represents a manifestation of his pent-up anger and resentment. Naturally, the international success of Lindqvist's fifth feature, like Norway's chilling Insomnia before it, has inspired an American remake, which is sure to boast superior special effects, but can't possibly capture the delicate balance he strikes here between the tender and the terrible." --Kathleen C. Fennessy

5 stars "Worth the wait in the post"

I for one really loved this movie.

The cinematography in the film was superb. It's one of those well made films where you feel as the characters feel, as though you have been pulled into it, while also keeping the suspense of not knowing what's coming up.

The story line is well developed and the Swedish dialogue doesn't hinder understanding or the continuity of the story to the Anglophone. Alot of interesting twists that kept me on the edge of my seat, even after watching it for the third time in one night.

5 stars " If vampires were real, this movie nailed it!"

I got this out from the local library and boy did this film have an unusual affect on me. After watching it, I couldn't stop thinking about it after I'd seen it.

I'd forgot that this was a vampire flick and had myself drawn to the loyal bond between predator and prey, something like a forbidden romance between a wolf and lamb.

Love is truly more powerful than desire!

"Epic Vampire Genre"

Excellent breaking rule of Vampire Genre. The cinematography is beautiful, not like the American version.

4 stars "Arty Vamp Movie"

Nice to have another angle on vampire genre movies, having subtitles wasn't an issue. This movie was a great art movie about friendship.

5 stars "Amazing"

When it arrived in the mail and i opened it up. i saw that on the cover is a comment saying “Think Twilight, only better.” This was correct. I love movies with subtitles so that was a bonus for me. The movie it self was suspencful, as in I had to know where these two young characters where going to head in the end. And even after the movie rolled its credits. I kept thinking about it.

For me this movie was more romantic then Twilight. As there was no sloppy cliches. Just pure innocence and love. Thats why this movie deserves a Five Star rating.

It's simply beautiful.
