Set in England in the years leading up to the First World War, Downton Abbey tells the story of a complicated community. The house has been home to the Crawley family for many generations, but it is also where their servants live, and plan, and dream, and they are as fiercely jealous of their rank as anyone. Some of them are loyal to the family and committed to Downton as a way of life, others are moving through, on the look out for betterment or love or just adventure. The difference is that they know so many of the secrets of the family, while the family know so few of theirs. But for all the passions that rage beneath the surface, this is a secure world, serene and ordered, and, at first glance, it seems it will last forever. Little do they know, family or staff, that the clouds of the conflict that will change everything are already gathering over their heads.
This sumptuous costume drama, written and created by Academy Award™ winner Julian Fellowes (Gosford Park, The Young Victoria) boasts an all-star cast featuring Hugh Bonneville (Lost in Austen), Maggie Smith (Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang, Harry Potter), Elizabeth McGovern (Clash of the Titans), Michelle Dockery (Cranford), Dan Stevens (Sense & Sensibility), Penelope Wilton (Dr Who, Pride & Prejudice), Jim Carter (Cranford), Phyllis Logan , Siobhan Finneran (Benidorm), Joanne Froggatt (Robin Hood), Rob James-Collier (Coronation Street) and Brendan Coyle (Lark Rise to Candleford). This prestigious ensemble brings the world of Downton to life with splendour and passion.

I am watching this on TV at the moment and it's wonderful. A period drama that will keep you guessing " what will happen next" Lovely clothes, romance. For the guys scandal, revenge. Be good to watch on DVD without the adverts.
From the very first scene I was absolutely absorbed. This period drama, set 100 years ago, still feels current and fresh. There is novelty in the fact that it ISN'T an adaptation from a novel – Julian Fellowes has written a timeless story that feels like it could have been penned by Jane Austen.
Maggie Smith is superb (as always) and has many of the best lines, which she delivers perfectly. The story, while perhaps a little slower moving than some dramas we are used to, is the perfect pace for a 7-episode drama, and I was fascinated to see the two worlds (above stairs and below stairs) interacting.
Highly, highly recommended, I wish I could give it 10 stars! I can't wait for season 2.
I liked this series, it takes you into every corner of both the Crawley family who have lived and ruled the Abbey for many generations, and there servants, some of which are loyal and others who are anything but. There lives are weaved through on going drama's of which we wait on series 2 to see how they turn out, and what else will happen to the family…
The opportunity to preorder Downton Abbey and have it delivered on schedule met all my expectations in terms of reliability. Thank you
Very difficult indeed not to grow to love the characters of Downton Abbey. Whether lords, ladies or hired help, they are all human and have their own secrets, passions and aspirations. This show is truly addictive and entertaining.
