Every crime show / tv series have a specific purpose to the criminals's crime and they would focuses the story there, however, the Criminal Mind focuses on the story of the crime.
The elite FBI profilers did the investigation which they have searched for clues in the past and relating it to the case, are all true and we viewers can understand why they committed those crimes. This is similar to the Bones tv series. Instead of talking about how the victim died using the bones, they used past history knowledge to discover the criminal.
