Description

In The Name Of / Columbia Records announce the self-tilted, full-length debut from enigmatic, pop duo Cults. The album will be released June 10th (New Zealand) and includes some of the bands most coveted, first released tracks: “Go Outside,” “Most Wanted,” and “Oh My God.” Cults full-length was recorded and self-produced in the band’s hometown of New York City. Working with engineer Shane Stoneback (Vampire Weekend, Sleigh Bells) the self-titled LP is chock full of some of the most deliciously offbeat, slanted and enchanted songs you’re likely to hear all year.

The band finished a handful of shows at SXSW including showcases for Pitchfork’s Offline, Stereogum, Filter, and Other Music to which the Austin Statesman noted, when watching the bands captivating performance, “it’s almost impossible not to get lured in. These guys can play.“  While Pitchfork declared, as the band played new tracks from the upcoming release, it’s “a promising start for these guys.”

And a promising start it is, Cults debuted their first new song in over a year, “You Know What I Mean”, which shot the band to the top of Hype Machine’s ‘Most Blogged Artists’ list for a week straight seeing over 100 + posts of the delicately, sweet  track on Spin.com, Pitchfork, Stereogum, Vulture, Paste Magazine and many more.

More on the upcoming self-titled album: tracks like “Most Wanted” and “Go Outside”, compresses key points in the history of pop including nods to everyone from My Bloody Valentine to Phil Spector to Jay Z and Lesley Gore. Taking the listener down some very unexpected (and sometimes, unexpectedly dark) places indeed.

Gorgeously infectious melodies sit alongside surreal samples, soaring, cinematic choruses envelop lyrics detailing restlessness and heartbreak, and lush, out-and out- pop hits (“Bumper”, the anthemic closer “Rave On”) rub up against tracks of a decidedly more sinister bent (“Walk At Night”, “Never Saw the Point”). This is a pop record boldly unafraid to wear its idiosyncrasies on its sleeve, as well as its vivid harmonies.

Cults is Brian Oblivion and Madeline Follin.
