Enjoyed this as a change from the standard. Less complex than many extensions and provoked a good deal of discussion. Rules easy to understand although the Pyrrhic victory seems the most common outcome. Easier if another player maintains the Disaster tracki
Had a fun few games with oil springs. As far as a physical product goes, well worth it. Tiles look/feel like the games ones and the rule changes are explained in detail.
After a few games I'm thinking I may fiddle with the rules. Oil seems too flexible. Everyone ended up just grabbing some oil and converting it to resources instead of trading.
A nice bit of flavour if you only have standard Catan, otherwise if you've got one of the expansions, I wouldn't bother. I no longer use oil springs after obtaining Cities and Knights.
For the low price, it's worth it to spice up your next game.
This Settlers of Catan mini-expansion adds a little bit of luck to the game (usually bad luck!), but not that much complexity. Oil replaces the desert hex, and one each of the forest and pasture hexes. It's powerful, but comes at a cost.
Enough pieces are included for the ordinary 3–4 player game, and for a 5–6 player game, which is a nice touch at the price!
Oil is scarce and its use does not come without cost. Using oil produces pollution as well as climate-changing emissions, which bring with them the threat of coastal flooding – and absolute disaster. With the discovery of oil on Catan, its inhabitants face a new challenge: deciding whether the common good is worth limiting oil usage or whether the pursuit of victory is worth the risk of ruin.
