""Captain" is Even Better than "Ship of Rome!""
5 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

I bought the first book in this series and read it in about 36 hours after purchase. The First book in the series (Ship of Rome) deals with the (true) story of how Rome built a Navy in six months and then proceeded to use it to defeat the Most powerful (Carthaginian) Navy of the time with it. The second book, “Captain of Rome” is about the consequences of that first victory, and the upheavals in Rome. All at a largely unknown time of Roman History.. The Old Republic. The First Punic (Carthaginian) War is a period of history largely overshadowed by the later events of the Second Punic war (ie: Hannibal etc) and its a time when Rome was not an Empire, just a fairly powerful Italian City State. John Stack has the gift of a True Storyteller. His prose is clear and concise and his characters carefully drawn to involve the reader totally from Page One. But the biggest threat to our main characters is not always the Carthaginians… Often it's their own political Masters, back in Rome. On top of that, almost unbelievably, it's the story of the Largest Naval Battle of ALL TIME – Best estimate is that over 750 ships were engaged, from both sides. (By Comparison the next largest Naval battle has about 300 ships from both sides engaged.) And somehow he has made “Captain of Rome” an even better read than “Ship of Rome” was, so getting the third novel in this series in a No Brainer- I'm there, waiting NOW!
