Description

Unbeknown to many tourists (and some Kiwis), New Zealand is a land of quirky collectors, colourful characters and unusual 'backyard' projects. It is also, more commonly known, to have some of the most beautiful 'off-the-beaten-track' scenery in the world. This book lets the reader in on all those unusual things to do and places to see that don't appear in the regular tourist or travel guides. While some places are well known locally, they are more often than not bypassed in favour of the bigger drawcards. From Hawera's Elvis Presley Room and the Pyramids of Otago to Patea's extensive lightbulb collection to the remote and delightful Guns Camp. Along the way meet colourful characters, stroll empty beaches and uncover the other side of New Zealand's history. Worth A Detour takes you on more quirky adventures than a traveller could wish for. Avoid the tour buses, the crowds, the tacky souvenirs, pop a copy of this guide in your glovebox, pack a suitcase and come see the real New Zealand.

4 stars "Great book"

This is a great book if you are planning a tour of NZ. I found several places I didn't even know where there. Would recommend

5 stars "Excellent reading for travellers-vicarious or otherwise."

Not only a very useful book for the traveller with a sense of adventure, but also fascinating reading for the arm-chair traveller. I like it very much.
