Description

“The end was near.” -Voices from the Zombie War

The Zombie War came unthinkably close to eradicating humanity. Max Brooks, driven by the urgency of preserving the acid-etched first-hand experiences of the survivors from those apocalyptic years, traveled across the United States of America and throughout the world, from decimated cities that once teemed with upwards of thirty million souls to the most remote and inhospitable areas of the planet. He recorded the testimony of men, women, and sometimes children who came face-to-face with the living, or at least the undead, hell of that dreadful time. World War Z is the result. Never before have we had access to a document that so powerfully conveys the depth of fear and horror, and also the ineradicable spirit of resistance, that gripped human society through the plague years.

It began with rumours from China about another pandemic. Then the cases started to multiply and what had looked like the stirrings of a criminal underclass, even the beginnings of a revolution, soon revealed itself to be much, much worse. Faced with a future of mindless, man-eating horror, humanity was forced to accept the logic of world government and face events that tested our sanity and our sense of reality. Based on extensive interviews with survivors and key players in the 10-year fight-back against the horde, "World War Z" brings the very finest traditions of American journalism to bear on what is surely the most incredible story in the history of civilisation.

Reviews

"'An absolute must have... Brooks infuses his writing with such precise detail and authenticity, one wonders if he knows something we don't' - Simon Pegg, writer and director, Shaun of the Dead

'A cracking read... Brooks has hit gruesome gold with this beauty... one of the best books I've read all year' - The Darkside Magazine

“An ‘oral history’ of the global war the evil brain-chewers came within a hair of winning. Zombies are among us-turn on your television if you don’t believe it. But, Brooks reassures us, even today, human fighters are hunting down the leftovers, and we’re winning. [His] iron-jaw narrative is studded with practical advice on what to do when the zombies come, as they surely will. A literate, ironic, strangely tasty treat.” -Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

“Possesses more creativity and zip than entire crates of other new fiction titles. Think Mad Max meets The Hot Zone . . . It’s Apocalypse Now, pandemic-style. Creepy but fascinating.”
- USA TODAY

“Prepare to be entranced by this addictively readable oral history of the great war between humans and zombies. . . . Will grab you as tightly as a dead man’s fist. A.”
- Entertainment Weekly, EW Pick

“Probably the most topical and literate scare since Orson Welles' War of the Worlds radio broadcast. . . . This is action-packed social-political satire with a global view.”
- Dallas Morning News"

“A horror fan’s version of Studs Terkel’s The Good War. . . . Like George Romero’s Dead trilogy, World War Z is another milestone in the zombie mythology.”
- Booklist

“Brooks commits to detail in a way that makes his nightmare world creepily plausible. . . . Far more affecting than anything involving zombies really has any right to be. . . . The book . . . opens in blood and guts, turns the world into an oversized version of hell, then ends with and affirmation of humanity’s ability to survive the worst the world has to offer. It feels like the right book for the right times, and that’s the eeriest detail of all.”
- A.V. Club, The Onion

“The best science fiction has traditionally been steeped in social commentary. World War Z continues that legacy. . . . We haven’t been this excited about a book without pictures since-well, since ever.”
- Metro

5 stars "The definitive source for the International Zombie Invasion"

Do you remember the invasion that nearly destroyed human kind? Brooks does and he has done an amazing job interviewing those who were there from the beginning and on the front lines.

Thsi book is easily one of the best works of zombie (fiction) invasion titles out there documenting the entire history from patient zero to the aftermath and cleanup process of this dark period in mans' history.

The title is well written and draws you in from the beginning. Written in a very serious, documentary style; you will not be able to put it down until the last word.

5 stars "Terrifyingly real..."

This book will make you want to stock up on food and water and guns… A lot of guns.

4 stars "A must in any zombie library!"

Too much of the zombie genre focusses on military, some kind of kung fu expert, or a guy with a gun and a criminal record. Here Brooks shows us the humanity of those in admist the Z war (even if some are military, kung fu experts or guys with guns!)

Each interview adds a little more information which begins to create a broader understanding of the global ramifications of a zombie apocalypse that man kind hauled its backside out of to survive.

Leaves you appreciating both the survivors and the horrors they had to go through with a little more emotion and a lot more paranoia.

Great read! A little hard to get into but once the ball gets rolling, it's next to impossible to put down!

5 stars "An absolute must-read for true Zombie fans."

Easily the best book written about Zombies and a must read for fans of the genre. Max Brooks drew on inspiration for this masterpiece in the form of the Godfather of Zombies, George A Romero and the military wartime classic An Oral History of World War II. It is perhaps this seamless mesh of fact and fiction that draws the reader in and begs the question of is this what would happen if it could happen…

Treated as if WWZ has actually occurred on earth, it is at times frightening to see just how easily an outbreak like this could run rampant across the population and how quickly societies can fall into chaos and carnage.

They're currently filming WWZ in Malta (as of July '11) and I plan on reading WWZ again before release. I hope they include the reference, somehow, to the All Blacks and the Springboks battling in the Tri-Nations tournament.

Very realistic with all the gore that fans will love, 5 stars and I'm jealous of those yet to read it as they have a real treat in store.
