3 stars "Great finale, but a static and repetitive road getting there."

What the Night Knows is that Dean Koontz can churn out a good and scary thriller that will hold you until the end. Sadly, this isn't it. I stuck with it (after a break to read something else) even though it was tortuous in places- and I'm not describing the plot details. As said, I found it static, repetitive and too linear but the actual writing itself was very evocative and beautifully descriptive in many places. However, this wasn't enough to save it from being a laborious slog to get to what was , thankfully, an involving and exciting climax. If you buy it, stick with it but be ready to pay in tedium along the way.

4 stars "A great story about life and death"

I found this book very easy to read and hard to put down. It follows detective Calvino as he tries to destroy a spirit that has been following him, waiting for a oppertunity, for 20 years

1 stars "Disappointing"

I have previously enjoyed this authors writing, but this was memorable in that I could have put it down and forgotten it at any time. Story was not believable. In giving one star I am being charitable.

Description

Billy Lucas confesses to a shocking crime. He's only fourteen years old but he's a sadistic killer and proud of it. He's in the secure wing of the state hospital but … he seems too wise for his age, not crazy, too knowing. About the nature of evil, and whether it lives on beyond death. Too knowing about other crimes that took place before he was born …

Other murders from twenty years ago surface in the mind of Detective John Calvino as he interviews young Billy Lucas. Calvino carries away a signed confession … and a sense of great danger. That night he feels that somehow Billy has come home with him, to his family.

Over the next weeks, this haunted feeling does not go away. It only gets worse. Then another killing spree happens, just as and when John Calvino dreaded it would. Billy is safely locked away, but not the ghost, if the ghost exists, that links these murders with past crimes, and with John Calvino. Anything could happen, and surely will … again.

Review

“The author's first book, Star Quest, a sf paperback, was published in 1969. Since then, Koontz has written scores of titles in a wide range of genres from children's books to graphic novels. Yet, from his always-popular body of work there sometimes emerges one of particular merit, one likely to add even more readers to his fan base. This spooky ghost story is such a book. It succeeds as an outstanding work of horror because of several elements: the appeal of the main character, homicide detective John Calvino, whose family was murdered by a serial killer when he was 14; the unstoppable evil of the killer, Alton Turner Blackwood, whose spirit returns from death to embody others so that he can force them to do his bidding; and Koontz's adherence to his own creed for writing suspense in which The Chase, The Race Against Time, and The Anticipation of a Violent Event are of equal importance. Essential for Koontz's myriad fans as well as followers of horror in general.” Library Journal
