Description
Pell Ridley, daughter of a good-for-nothing preacher in rural England, has watched her mother suffer the intolerable burden of too many children, too little money, and a terrible descent into sorrow. So, before dawn on her wedding day, Pell escapes. Taking her only possession - a beautiful white horse - she heads for Salisbury Fair in hopes of finding work and the start of a new life. But as Pell rides farther and farther from home, her emotional ties (to her family, her childhood, her abandoned lover) refuse to release her, surprising her instead with their tenacity, and their power to alter the course of her journey through a strange world of gypsies, lost things, and unlikely love.
