Description

A must-read for league fans, as the behind-the-scenes never-told-before story of the club’s successes in the 2001, 2002 and 2003 seasons is detailed through Monty Betham’s recollections as well as through the words of the then CEO Mick Watson. Indeed, Watson - who breaks his silence for the first time since leaving the club in 2005 - offers an incredible insight into the goings-on at the franchise as Monty Betham’s fortunes at the club took a turn for the worse in the 2004 and 2005 seasons.

The true story of why Monty Betham took up professional boxing in 2007 is revealed, and why he walked away from the sport, undefeated, after five fights is explained in detail. There is also an interesting overview of his stint on the reality-TV show Dancing With The Stars, where he captured the imagination - and a few hearts - of the New Zealand public as he danced his way into the final against netballer Temepara George.

Monty Betham - Baring My Soul will leave you with a new perspective about one of the best athletes produced in New Zealand. Monty Betham gave author John Matheson a brief: "I want this book to be honest. I don’t want to duck any issues. Let’s give readers the chance to find out how it all went down - no bullshit. Just the truth". Monty Betham has indeed bared his soul.

5 stars "Preaching To The Unconverted"

Before opening this book one could safely say I wasn't counted amongst fans of Monty Betham, but after struggling to put the book down for 176 pages, my attitude has been well and truly adjusted.

I picked this book up on the promise that it would tell some never-before-told tales and expose the other side of stories we have only ever been selectively drip fed by the media, it certainly didn't disappoint. And like the athlete himself when he was in the boxing ring, this book doesn't pull any punches. We see a side of Monty that some never knew existed and others had forgotten about.

I found John Matheson's writing style to be entertaining, captivating and very easy to read. This is a must-have for rugby leagues fans, but it absolutely-can't-be-missed by anyone who has said a bad word about Monty Betham.
