5 stars "Absolutely brilliant."

The book I was going to (try to) write in retirement. Not actually ‘complete’, of course (is any cookbook really ‘complete’), but a pretty comprehensive, no-nonsense collection of everyday – and not so everyday – recipes that is proving invaulable. Explicit instructions that chefs often leave out because so much stuff is second knowledge to them – but not to us amateur cooks.

4 stars "Simple and Easy-to-Follow for Novice Chef"

You will find plenty of ideas for wonderful dinner parties here.

This book sets out many classic recipes and cooking techniques in a simple, concise way. Each recipe is in a short, one-per-page format with space for scribbled notes too.

Although most of the recipes are ‘euro-centric’, there are a few Asian-style dishes too. Most are classic tucker: roast meats, cakes, creamy desserts.

For myself, a novice chef wanting to improve both my knowledge and skill-base in cooking, this book was a good way into the kitchen. However, this could also be a good reference for experienced cooks who just need inspiration or a reminder (as attested by my Mum).
