Description

This work continues the most ambitious and imaginative epic fantasy since "The Lord of the Rings". Bloodthirsty, treacherous and cunning, the Lannisters are in power on the Iron Throne in the name of the boy-king Tommen. But fear and deceit are in the air: their enemies are poised to strike. The Martells of Dorne seek vengeance for their dead, and the heir of King Balon of the Iron Isles, Euron Crow's Eye, is as black a pirate as ever raised a sail. Across the war-torn landscape of the Seven Kingdoms, Brienne the Beauty (thus named in mockery of her great size and strength) seeks for Sansa Stark, having vowed to protect Sansa from the wrath of Queen Cersei, Tommen's power-hungry mother. Meanwhile apprentice Maester, Samwell Tarly brings a mysterious babe in arms south to the Citadel from the cruel frozen north where the sinister Others threaten the Wall! "A Feast for Crows" brings to life dark magic, complex political intrigue and horrific bloodshed. Against a backdrop of incest and fratricide, alchemy and murder, victory may go to the men and women possessed of the coldest steel and the coldest hearts.

'Colossal, staggering! Martin captures all the intoxicating complexity of the Wars of the Roses or Imperial Rome in his imaginary world ! The writing is always powerful.' SFX

'Fantasy literature has never shied away from grandeur, but the sheer mind-boggling scope of this epic has sent other fantasy writers away shaking their heads!' Its ambition: to construct the Twelve Caesars of fantasy fiction, with characters so venomous they could eat the Borgias.' Guardian

'Such a splendid tale. I read my eyes out -- I couldn't stop till I'd finished and it was dawn' Anne McCaffrey

'A Game of Thrones offers the rich tapestry that the very best fantasy demands: iron and steel within the silk, grandeur within the wonder, and charactrs torn between deep love and loyalty. Few created worlds are as imaginative and diverse.' Janny Wurts

4 stars "What is dead cannot die"

George R.R Martin has taken the fantasy genre with it's roughly established rules and ripped them asunder. This continuation of the game of thrones delves into the gutter politics of Kings Landing, the betrayals and intrigue.

He continues with the perspective based chapters and touches upon a number of the characters from previous books. But, as he admits in the appendixes, he did not have enough pages in this volume to deal with more than a few of them. If you are expecting to see detail on John Snow, Arya or even Tyrion, you will be disappointed, but what happens to the other characters more than makes up for this delay.

It is a gripping book that keeps the pages turning and it opens the stage for book 5 in this series with some fantastic ground work. And on the plus side, you can actually pre-order book 5 from Mighty Ape now as well and hopefully have it somewhere in October or November 2009.

3 stars "Not bad, but not the best"

Although I am a huge fan of the series, reading this one took almost 4 times as long as reading the other books in the series, because, quite often, it just wasn't as exciting as the other ones. Whilst there are some highly entertaining parts, they are too few, and very far between. I could not help but feel it is just nothing more than a lead up to A Dance With Dragons, but I agree, it is a necessary one.

5 stars "Awesome!"

Had a lot of fun with this. Really recommend buying this. If you like the fantasy realm and being taken into another dimension then definitely buy this. It is truly a work of art. I have read it so many times now but still am not sick of it. Hope to see this series carry on strongly as I dearly enjoy it!
