In 140 AD, twenty years after the unexplained disappearance of the entire Ninth Legion in the mountains of Scotland, young centurion Marcus Aquila (Tatum) arrives from Rome to solve the mystery and restore the reputation of his father, the commander of the Ninth. Accompanied only by his British slave Esca (Bell), Marcus sets out across Hadrian’s Wall into the uncharted highlands of Caledonia – to confront its savage tribes, make peace with his father’s memory, and retrieve the lost legion’s golden emblem, the Eagle of the Ninth.

This is the second take on the legendary disappearance of the Roman ninth Legion in recent years, the other being 2010's Centurion by Neil Marshall.
I must admit I wasn't expecting much, but there are some good action sequences, some amazing scenery, some terrible CG and some interesting character development including a great performance from Jamie Bell (Billy Elliot). But don't expect the plot or it's “twists” to stun you. Also, I'm not a fan of Channing Tatum (GI Joe), but for the most part he stands his own in a strong cast.
Another interesting take on the Ninth Legion with an interesting conclusion, so go in with an open mind and no expectations and you should be pleasantly surprised, however The Eagle pales in comparison with Neil Marshall's more interesting take on the subject matter.
