Boardwalk Empire Reviews

“From its breathtaking cinematography to its meticulous period costumes to its smart, snappy dialogue to its talented cast, Boardwalk Empire presents a TV program that's so polished and beautifully executed, each episode feels as rich and memorable as its own little Scorsese film.” Salon.com

“They've richly re-created a Roaring '20s world on the edge of an ocean and a precipice, and populated it with a riveting rogues gallery.” USA Today

“Watching HBO's new Boardwalk Empire is like sitting in your favorite tavern and hearing someone say, "Drinks are on the house.” Friends, it doesn't get much better." New York Daily News

“Boardwalk Empire: The Complete Third Season delivers the show's finest twelve episodes yet. The series has always been excellent television, but now it's also thoroughly addictive. Bravo to Winter and his immensely talented cast and crew for really pushing themselves this time around. Highly recommended.” DVD Verdict (Season 3)

“The characters are unforgettable, and the history, of course, is more entertaining than fiction. The filming of Boardwalk Empire just may be more decadent than the decadence it's celebrating. It's not TV, and it's not really HBO. It's an event, not to be missed.” Chicago Sun Times

“There’s so much to savor about “Boardwalk Empire” — Martin Scorsese and “The Sopranos” writer Terence Winter’s sprawling look at Prohibition-era gangsters in 1920 — it’s hard to know where to begin. One can luxuriate in the atmosphere, or admire the scintillating cast — a shrewdly assembled collection of talented not-quite movie stars, among them Steve Buscemi, Kelly Macdonald, and four Michaels: Shannon, Stuhlbarg, Pitt and Kenneth Williams. As for the story, it’s been a while since such a sweeping, epic backdrop has been put to better use.” Variety (Season 1)

“Like a good whiskey, it's rough and smooth in all the right ways. By a few episodes in, you'll want to order it by the case.” Time (Season 1)

“BOARDWALK EMPIRE is a sweeping, cinematic recreation of Prohibition-era Atlantic City that harnesses the power of profanity and poetry to retell the tale of America's past. Creator Terence Winter's lush mob drama is inhabited by ghosts both historical and fictional, led by Steve Buscemi's cock-of-the-boardwalk Nucky Thompson, who adds a decidedly eccentric signature to the year's most dazzling production.” AFI Awards (season 1)

“the third season of Boardwalk Empire reminds the viewer that they have a solid team of writers, directors and actors, given a Scorsese seal of approval. And in the show's third season, they may have done their best work to date.” DVD Talk (Season 3)

“In so many ways, it's as good as television gets.” Philadelphia Enquirer
