5 stars "About time - and Fantastic!!"

This arrived yesterday (release day). I had pre-ordered it and it was completely worth it!!

We have a Samsung Plasma tv – and it was brilliant!!!!! This is probably my all time favourite movie – and having seen it at the movies 4 times in 3D and once in 2D – I just HAD to get the 3D version when it was finally released outside the Panasonic deal. The 3D effects were pretty amazing – and I was able to lose myself in it almost as much as I did in the cinema.

If you enjoyed this movie in the theatre – and you have all the hardware required to watch 3D blu-ray movies – then this is a highly recommended purchase!!!

4 stars "Brilliant visuals, shoddy plot"

Avatar on Blu-Ray 3D, about time. It is argued that the digital 3D used on a lot of films these days is a gimmick, and does nothing to enhance the experience. Not so with Avatar, every frame of 3D creates depth and a tangible sensation of dramatic reality. Visually, James Cameron has arguably achieved perfection with Avatar, this film was beautiful to watch on 35mm film, so 3D Blu-Ray is a visual experience beyond words. It's just great to watch (as other reviews have said.

Having said that, a lot of the hype around this film seems (to me) to be unjustified. Yes it may be breath-taking, but thats we're the brilliance ends. The plot is dreadfully predictable, and frankly, a little annoying after you've seen this film more than 2 times. It's pretty much a sci-fi rip-off of the classic “man is meant to be fighting natives. Falls in love with a native. Ends up fighting with the natives” (Pochahontas, anyone-). Plus, some of the dialogue is absolutely cringe-worthey.
Primarily owing to this, this film can really begin to drag if you're not a die-hard fan. The important plot-advancing sequences are few and far between, and when I think on what actually happens in this film, I don't think I can justify it's length. In comparison, the 263-minute extended edition of Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King kept me glued to the screen the whole time. Think about that.
However, the camera work is fantastic, the characters have a fantastic depth and development (maybe all that extra time was good for something), and the action sequences are really quite exciting.
Overall, this is a genuinely entertaining film, that suffers from a few quite intrusive (in my mind) plot and length issues. Having said that, if you're thinking of buying this, you probably don't share my opinion on that. But, everything else in this film is fantastic, especially the visuals. Despite what I have said about Avatar,it is a film I enjoy watching, especially now I own it in 3D. Almost a perfect 5, but I'm going to have to give this a 4 (probably only 3 or 3.5 if you're foolish enough to get in 2D, or – god forbid- standard definition DVD shudder). Enjoy.
