"Great Buy"
5 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

I bought this game from Mighty Ape and would highly recommend it to everyone, My favourite part of this game would have to be the ability to decide what you want to do and customise your character.

"Great Game"
5 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

This is actually a good game, I had read mixed reviews and just went ahead a bought it.

I am happy with it, did everything I was expecting. It is a fun game and has a lot of stealth or action sequences. Also have a character opinion and choices. Which made the game that much more enjoyable.

Only cons are it felt to short, and the hacking/lock-picking is pretty annoying at times.

Happy with my purchase and hope they would make a number to or build on it

"Unexpected Genius"
4 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

I bought this game on a whim, but what I received was much more than what I had paid for. Sure, the gameplay isnt as fluid as other stealth games such as the Splinter Cell series, but the depth in choice, and character dialogue will blow you away. There is an odd level of satisfaction when you realise there is currently 12 people who truly despise you, and it was all your fault, because the choices you make effect their opinion of you. This game is a must buy for anyone who likes their game with a bit of character depth.

"Huge Potential!"
4 stars"

This game has huge potential! If the developers kept it in development for just a few months more and fixed the many bugs and the dodgy firing system and also some improvement in the graphics it could very well have been in the running for game of the year! It is a fantasic game idea with a few original aspects. Hopefully the developers take all the complaints about bugs and what not in the game and release a sequel in the next year or 2 fine tuned and polished!

I believe that this game is under-rated great story line so far includes deep political thinking and game-play similar to Hitman

"Not bad." Purchased on Mighty Ape

I've been playing for a few days now, have completed several missions and so far I'm enjoying the game fine. It's not great, no. It's not a wake up in the morning and you can't wait to get into it sort of game. But it's a fine pass time game in my opinion.

One important thing to mention is that although it may have a real world setting and story it's not even remotely realistic. You still have magic RPG powers, for example one that negates the need to reload your gun while the power is active, the prices for weapons and equipment don't seem to be based in reality, magically recharging armour (although it's called “endurance” for some unknown reason), boss battles, and little things like not requiring an actual lock pick to pick locks, or some kind of gadget to hack and bypass key pads.

I've read reviews that say the stealth sucks and the combat sucks and so forth, but I haven't found that at all. I didn't delve too much into stealth but it seems to work ok. You make more noise running than walking, the heavier your armour the more noise it makes and so forth. But that sneaking animation is enough to put me off stealth. I certainly had a ‘what were they thinking’ moment when I first saw that. Combat seems to work fine too. You've just got to remember you start out relatively unskilled with not terribly good weapons. When you raise your skill in a particular weapon set and customise your weapon with mods that improve accuracy you'll find it more enjoyable. It can be a bit tricky aiming at close range because there's no aim point except in aim mode (which zooms your view in). Just try and face your target and shoot from the hip. It works ok… sort of.

If I were to pick two things I dislike most about the game it would be the checkpoint save system and the difficulty. I hate the checkpoint save system, no matter the game or the genre. But it seems particularly egregious in a role playing game. I've never before encountered a serious RPG that did not allow me to save and load where I choose. That right there is my WTF were you thinking Obsidian?

There are three difficulty settings; Easy, Normal and Hard. I'm playing on Normal but it offers little challenge. Thanks to recharging armour, oh sorry… endurance, I'm surprised if I get hurt at all. The only way I do is if I'm very careless or the enemy gets lucky, or in one or two boss battles. Mostly I just breeze right through combat, and it's a serious bore. It was such a bore that I restarted my game on Hard, but that is WAY hard. It was in fact too tough, and after about the fifth mission I couldn't continue and had to start over AGAIN! That has taken a lot of the fun out of the game for me. There needs to be another difficulty setting in between Normal and Hard. Hard should be Nightmare. Not being able to adjust the aim mode sensitivity compounds the difficulty, because if you're like me and aren't that great at aiming with the thumb stick, you'll probably want to turn the sensitivity right down or you're all over the place. But there's no control for that in Alpha Protocol.

There certainly could be more skills. Aside from the various combat skills there are four; stealth, sabotage, toughness and technical aptitude. I didn't find much use for any of these. I wasn't interested in stealth (because of that goofy animation) and sabotage and technical aptitude didn't seem to be very useful. I certainly had no use for toughness because combat is so easy. So I tend to just sink all my points into assault rifles and pistols (even though I've hardly ever use my pistol because I never run out of rifle ammo). Moreover you level up at the drop of a hat so there is no satisfaction at all in levelling up. For me it's like “Ho-hum, more points that I don't need and don't really know what to do with.” I would have preferred it if lock pick, hack and bypass were handled with skills instead of those stupid and tedious mini games (oh yeah, that's one more thing I don't like). That would have given me something useful to spend my skill points on would also mean I didn't have to stop every two minutes to play the stupid mini games.

I like that the missions take place in a variety of locations, but all the missions seem a bit repetitive when you get down to it. So far they are all combat missions, and they all come through your computer so there are no hidden missions to discover. There are no locations where you wander around and talk to NPCs and pick up side missions. There's nothing like that at all. And no exploration.

One of my favourite things about the game is how you are required to buy your own equipment and weapons. Nothing is provided for you. You must gather cash on each mission and buy your own gear. Fortunately it's liberally scattered around everywhere, as are weapon mods that you can sell. This is really cool. What's more you can modify and customise weapons and armour, and I always like that. And it's just a little thing, but I like how inventory, character and intel screens are accessed through the back button, and the game functions and options are accessed through the start button. It may not seem like much but I prefer that those things are kept separate and not all shown on the main menu.

The story is told in flashbacks which I don't like, but it otherwise seems ok. Some evil corporation is selling high tech weapons to a terrorist group and you have to stop them. I'm sure there will be some twists and turns as it progresses. It hasn't exactly gripped me but it's ok. It's still another save-the-world-from-the-shadowy-evil-menace game though. Just this time the menace is a global corporation instead of an ancient demon or something. But it's ok. Dialog and character interaction is ok too. You have choices how you react and this can lead to the NPC liking or disliking you, which in turn may lead to various benefits and consequences. But I don't see why there has to be a time limit on making your decision. The counter starts going down as the NPC is talking and you have to be ready with your response as soon as they've finished speaking. So I tend to concentrate on my reply options rather than what the NPC is saying and I tend to miss stuff. Maybe they should have a toggle in the Options for that for people who just need a little bit more time for things to sink in.

So it's not a great game, but it's not as bad as what you may have read. It could be improved greatly if the difficulty was tweaked a bit, and maybe some optional side missions, or missions that required you to remain undetected so as to make stealth more rewarding. Oh, and if they did something about that stupid animation. But if you're just looking for something to tide you over to Fallout: New Vegas, Gothic 4 and a slew of other big RPGs due out later this year, and you don't expect too much out of it, then this game should fit the bill. I'm with the other reviewer… if you're on the fence you should just buy it.

"in the right path. . ."
4 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

Alpha Protocol is a story driven rpg, that offers a lot if your looking for a good story, mediocre gameplay rpg.. its about making choices that affects the you later in the game..

it has some flaws, like texture fading, aiming problems, disfunctional controls.. but all in all, its playable..

in my opnion, it still needed some time to develop, it needed some more customization and better combat.. feels like obsidian rushed it, but who knows..

its a good game, if your a fan of games like star wars kotor and mass effect, but dont expect an open world like these games, its more linear..

i give it a 4/5..

"Fun, but not perfect"
3 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

Alpha Protocol calls itself “The Espionage RPG” which is probably a fair description. The gameplay is a lot like Splinter Cell but adds in RPG-style character development/progression and dialogues.

The character development is quite well done, and carries a genuine feeling of advancement – although by the end of the game you might start to feel a bit overpowered. The dialogue was quite well executed too – different characters respond to different approaches.

The core gameplay is enjoyable but isn't helped by some slightly dodgy AI. Graphically, the game looks alright but certainly nothing exceptional.

Overall, Alpha Protocol falls into the category of “enjoyable but not perfect”. Had Obsidian managed to nail the AI and some of the game balancing and graphical issues (pop-in!), it could've been an absolute stunner.

"Good Game To Buy!!!"
3 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

Alpha Protocol is a good game. Some of the features are a bit dim, such as the graphics and sometimes the gameplay is glitchy and annoying. On the other hand the game has some good features, one of those being the storyline. The story is about an Agent that gets betrayed behind a huge conspiracy to take over the world. The dialouge system is also great. If you have played Mass effect 1 or 2 it is kinda like that.

Pros

  • Awesome Dialouge system
  • Awesome Storyline
  • Good RPG Elements

Cons

  • Kinda dull gameplay at some areas
  • Graphics

"Don't believe the reviews! (Apart from this one XD)"
4 stars"

Gamespot, Ign etc have all been giving this 6.0 and worse! But it's not bad at all, I bought it because I'm a risk taker hahaha(I was bored).

It's like a hybrid of Mass Effect, Deus ex, and Syphon filter.

It tries to be all but comes off as rushed and unfinished. But still completely playable and enjoyable.

An 8/10 is my score. It's a shame it was rushed towards the end, but still a good game in my collection. So yeah if you are on the fence, just buy it.

one of several game sof this genre around at the moment. Plays well if a bit predictable. graphics are ok but nothing special. If you are a fan of the third person shooter then you will quite likely enjoy this game, if you like something a bit more challenging then probably not

"GOOD! but missing something"
3 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

Alpha Protocol is a fun, interesting, worlds first espionage RPG. The game has some replay ability to see the other interesting outcomes in the game, pretty decent class system but the skill point system can be question sometimes quite different from well known RPG's. But overall I reckon you looking for a fun game this is for you, plus keep an eye out to see if DLC's new content come out for this game. 6.5/10

"Still a fun game"
4 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

This games old now, bit still a really good choice based RPG, with good perks and skills. The game has technical glitches, and the graphics aren't great (even for its time). But the branching choices made and different paths make this game easy to play through many times. It also only takes 18–20 hours, short for am RPG, but seems perfect for this game.

"Too much talking"

Not too bad a game. Too much talking in between the action for my liking. For the cheap price I cant complain.

"Good value for money"

The game is not the greatest but for the price I paid ($28 from memory) it was well worth it. Lots of weapon upgrades, good storyline, do try

"RPG SHOOTER!!"
3 stars"

I am the biggest fan of Rpg games and their is not many Rpg games where you get to shoot (Fall out saga and (Mass effect saga being the exception) but anyway that's all lasers and stuff this is like a fps Rpg game but with out the fps cam ect if you know what I mean. Any way the downs of the game were bad graphics bad bad firing system as mentioned below but I still had fun with this game and wouldn't hesitate to buy it.

"Fantastic blend of shooter meets RPG."
4 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

I believe this game was unfairly rated by critics and am disappointed that a sequel will not be released. Alpha Protocol successfully blends a shooter with stealth elements with an RPG level up system. Players drive the story forward by interacting with characters before during and after missions by selecting three different response options. These interactions as well as the decisons made throughout the game affect the outcome of the storyline resulting in multiple endings and giving the game high replayability. In addition to this a hard difficulty mode can also be unlocked upon game completion. Hacking, lockpicking, gadget use and stealth are all key to this game as well as an email system and store which allows you to purchase intel for missions and weapons as well as dossier information on key characters and factions. This is a fantastic game and I recommend it to anyone who wants to try something a bit different. The only let downs in the game are the poor enemy AI in some parts and at times dodgy weapon shooting. Otherwise a perfect game!

"A Very, Very Underrated Game!"
5 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

This is a GREAT game. Complaints by reviewers, and some players alike are totally off target!

STORY: Micheal Thorton is raked into a secret government program known as Alpha Protocol. There you are briefed on your mission and then you head to your first mission. This games plot is alot like a James Bond movie. Twists and turns and a secret agent background. The story is well done. Similar to Mass Effect and Dragon Age's branching conversation system, you choose what you say. This game does have a huge impact on what you say and do. Story is a high point.

GAMEPLAY: It plays alot like a mixture of Metal Gear Solid, Mass Effect, Deus Ex, and Splinter Cell. It is a third person shooter and you can assign points to multiple skills due to your gameplay style. If you are a hard core shooter, youll assign skill points to assault rifles, shot guns, and all the armor perks. If you are an stealthy agent upgrade pistols and stealth all the way. This game is well balanced.

PRESENTATION: Graphics, soundtrack, are mediocre at best. The voice acting is very well done and it does a great job of pulling you into the story. Downside is that the main character is kind of a bland character.

This game does have some weird glitches and bugs. Very minimum though. I have never encountered all the bugs the reviewers said, so just go for it and play the game. Its great.

So in conclusion, If you enjoy Dragon Age, Mass Effect, and other moral choice games, you will surely love this!

"A Whole New Expereince"
3 stars"

I have played many role playing (RPG) games but I have never played one that is in a moden age like this.I liked this game all tho the Graphics werent the best it made up for it with the story line and the stuff you can do. I would recomend this game to all you people that love RPG game and a looking for a whole ne Expereince.

"Good game"
3 stars"

This is a good rpg game there are many choices you have to mmake threw out the game that can affect the whole outcome o the game. I give it a 3

"Multiple Endings"
5 stars"

Wow this game has so many different paths depending on the choices and consequences, I clocked it 4× and I still got a different ending with different achievements.

You can also choose different attributes depending on your gameplay style

"Lots of potential"
3 stars"

Decision making during conversations are the best part. The customization effects are so cool but the game overall isnt that good.

"Not quite great"
4 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

I can see what people mean when they write their reviews of this game. It's missing that little something to make it great. The storyline is pretty good, with some interesting characters, though some of them never really get any depth considering how large a role they may or may not play depending on how you treat them. Combat worked well, just took a little getting used to. I never really used many of the skills available, they just didn't seem necessary. I didn't have too much trouble getting through the majority of the game using stealth. All in all, I quite enjoyed this game after having low expectations from other peoples reviews. I think it's definitely worth buying, or at least give it a rental and check it out.
