Armageddon Expo 2012 went down this past weekend at Auckland's ASB Showgrounds. This was our third appearance at the Auckland show and we set up our biggest and best stand yet! It was also our busiest stand ever, we're still recovering!

We had loads of fun at Armageddon, it's always great to meet our customers in person and also gain some new ones. We saw heaps of great costumes, some of the best ones we saw over the weekend were Loki, Balrog and Akuma/Gouki from Street Fighter, Gundam, Living Dead Doll, Merida from Brave, Beetlejuice, Ryuk from Deathnote, and a few cool Adventure Time outfits. Check out our video below for some footage from Armageddon on Saturday.

We also ran a competition in our stand and we'd like to congratulate Umang Dahya who has scored himself a $100 Mighty Ape voucher and Paul Warren who scored the Ride In Dalek for his son.

This weekend the monkeys from Mighty Ape will be venturing to the South Island for Armageddon Christchurch 2012. This will be the first time that we've taken part in the Christchurch event, and we're not sure that we'll be ready for colder climate, brrrrr.

We'll have a stand there with loads of great games, anime, movies, books, collectibles, toys, home & office products and more. As an added bonus Christopher Paolini, the author of the Inheritance saga (including Eragon), will be signing books at our stand on Saturday from 2pm to 4pm thanks to Random House.

Our artwork for Armageddon Christchurch is a tribute to the classic '80s cartoon character and toy Voltron. In place of the five lions which joined together to form the super robot we used five monkeys. It's a great analogy for what we do at do at Mighty Ape; a bunch of monkeys unite to form Mighty Ape with the common goal of delivering a superior online shopping experience for all New Zealanders, “GO MIGHTY APE!”

Armageddon Christchurch 2012 is taking place at The Stables at Addington Raceway on Saturday and Sunday this weekend from 10am to 5pm each day. Entry is only $5, there are no pre-sales so just pay at the door. Swing by the official Armageddon Expo website for more details.

It's that time of the year again when the monkeys from Mighty Ape make the journey from the jungles of Auckland down to New Zealand's capital, Wellington, for the Armageddon Expo!

For those that don't know Armageddon is an annual expo that caters to sci-fi, gaming, anime and comic enthusiasts. Armageddon Wellington 2012 is taking place from 10am to 6pm on Saturday and Sunday at TSB Bank Arena. As we are an online store we don't often get to meet our customers face to face so we're looking forward to catching up with you down there.

We'll be there armed with loads of awesome products for you to check out and buy including games, books, DVDs, and Blu-rays as well as our EPIC collectibles range and cool home & office wares. Some of the products we'll have on hand include The Witcher 2, Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm Generations, Hunger Games books, Game of Thrones season 1, and Han Solo in carbonite ice tray. From collectibles we'll have the very cool Mass Effect 3 M-8 Avenger assault rifle – you must see this!

Mighty Ape's sneak peek at the PlayStation Vita

Mighty Ape and Sony teamed up last week to put on an event exclusively for Mighty Ape customers. One hundred or so gamers and Mighty Ape staff crammed into a bar in Auckland city on Wednesday night to get a sneak peek at the forthcoming PlayStation Vita.

The night opened with a brief presentation by Glen from Sony about their impressive new handheld console. He discussed it's many features including the dual anaolg sticks, touchscreen, rear touch pad, front and rear cameras, and the ability to use the Vita as a controller for your PS3. Following the presentation everyone was given the opportunity to have some hands-on time with the Vita and games including Uncharted, WipEout 2048, Little Deviants, Reality Fighters, and more.

It was a great night out! We wanted to share the night with everyone who couldn't make it to our preview night – there was only so many people we could cram into the bar – so we brought along a camera and had a chat with a few punters to get their thoughts on the amazing PlayStation Vita.

PlayStation Vita's launch is mere days away, Thursday to be precise, pre-order yours now to save $20 off the full price and receive it on release day!

Mighty Ape swings by Wellington

A small team of Mighty Ape monkeys headed down to the capital over the weekend for the Armageddon Expo in Wellington. We're still recovering (I'm pretty sure Ben's still sleeping) but it was a huge success and we can't wait for the next one.

The best part about the expo is meeting so many of our awesome customers. We love being an online store, but truth be told, we miss retail and hanging out with other like-minded gamers and movie-lovers. We still reminisce about our days as Gamezone and Gameplanet Store…the release parties, the tournaments, the beer and the pizza. I guess Armageddon is our way of reconnecting with the fans and the enthusiasts.

Setting up a stand in another city is a logistical nightmare, but hopefully you'll agree after looking at the photos that it was worth it in the end. Jonno, Che, Sean and Ben did an awesome job organising all the stock to be packed onto pallets and freighted down to Wellington. Once there, the stand was assembled, the branding attached, the stock unloaded, organized and priced. Once again we used Vend as our point of sale system, and it worked great. We'd recommend Vend to anyone selling at trade shows as it's entirely web-based and easy to setup. Plus, you can monitor sales from any Internet-enabled computer – nice!

Mighty Ape at Armageddon

Many of us here at Mighty Ape spent the weekend at the ASB Showgrounds in Auckland for the annual Armageddon Expo, and despite the aching feet and the huge backlog of work we've created for ourselves back at the warehouse, we had a LOT of fun and can't wait for next year's show.

It may come as a surprise to you that, despite being made up of a bunch of geeks and nerds, this was in fact our first appearance at the show. We've learned a lot, and reckon getting out there and meeting so many of our awesome customers (and some new ones, too!) was one of the best experiences we've had so far in 2010.

So a big “thanks!” to those who managed to swing by our stand…it was really cool to meet you, talk geek with you and put a face to your order number :P

A special thanks too to our new friends at VendHQ for their awesome web-based point-of-sale system…highly recommended for retail n00bs like us (well, some of us).

For those who couldn't make it…we'd love to see you next year. And if you live in Wellington, a little bird tells me we're investigating a road trip down to the capital for the next show…what do you think?!
