Coming Soon: Mighty Ape Marketplace

By Dylan

If you're anything like us, then you probably have a whole heap of pre-loved Games, Movies, Music and Books lying around the house that could be sold and turned into cash.

Online auctions are great, but it takes a long time to create listings and even longer to organise payment and delivery. We think we've come up with a better way, and we can't wait to show you…

Mighty Ape Marketplace will be the fastest and easiest way to list and sell the types of items you buy new from Mighty Ape. You'll have access to an existing marketplace of buyers who visit Mighty Ape every day to buy the types of items you want to sell. In fact, Google Analytics tells us that well over half a million shoppers visit Mighty Ape every month

The web monkeys are working hard to get Mighty Ape Marketplace live and ready for action as soon as possible. We're still a few weeks away, but now would be a great time to have a hunt around the house and get your stuff ready to list.

We think you'll have an opportunity to make good money selling your unwanted stuff, plus pick up some bargains from other customers to fill out your collection. Keep checking the blog in the coming weeks for more news on our marketplace and how you can get involved!

So, what do you think? Do you have stuff to list? Keen to try a new online marketplace?

Yes please..... Although there needs to be some rules in place to protect the customer especially around PC games and any games that require activation online, as the market is now moving more and more towards online activation and online accounts allot of games can only be used on one account and this will need to be looked at when selling a used version, I feel this is a worthy addition to your website, the ability to purchase pre-owned goods is a very good idea.

Keep up the good work Apes.

    Regards
    Jack C

I think this is a perfect idea! Can't wait for it to be up and running! Nice one Might Ape!

  • David says: 11 August 2010, 9:53am

Provided protections are in place to protect both the buyer and seller, then I think this is a pretty good idea. Any service that makes it easier to keep your gaming library fresh in these harsh economic times has to be encouraged :-)

seems like a good idea to me for pretty much anything that doesn't have an online activation

  • Tim says: 11 August 2010, 9:57am

This will be awesome! cut out the middle man

  • Matt says: 11 August 2010, 10:02am

I don't see any point to this. There' already TradeMe (rip off) and other auction sites that people use. A Mightyape one.. well i'm not sure what to expect. People getting ripped off by dishonest sellers or buyers? No thanks!

  • Alan says: 11 August 2010, 10:05am

Sounds good to me - i'll try it out :)

  • Dylan says: 11 August 2010, 10:09am

I cant give too much away right now, but I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at the protections we have in place for buyers, and the incentives for sellers to behave honestly!

  • Simon says: 11 August 2010, 10:23am

If the success fees are cheaper than Trademe (not difficult) then I'm in with a grin.

  • Sean says: 11 August 2010, 11:43am

Hmmm... you've got my interest. I wonder how surprising these incentives will be... ;)

  • Nick says: 11 August 2010, 12:05pm

I'm pleased to hear you guys have come up with stratagies to ensure trader honesty, any idea when you guys will have this service up and running?

  • Simon says: 11 August 2010, 12:23pm

Could be a winner... I'll definitely keep my eyes peeled to see what you guys will pull off.
But as everyone else mentioned: keeping sellers & buyers honest, fees to a minimum and protection for anything that has online activation or DLC.
Should be interesting to see this and how it develops. Good luck to your team!

  • Mighty Ape says: 11 August 2010, 12:24pm

@Nick we don't have a concrete date that we can share at this stage, but are expecting to launch Marketplace in a few weeks :)

  • Jack says: 11 August 2010, 12:28pm

What about products that require activation/accounts online, will the buyer be able to tell if the product has been activated already or if they cant play online due to an account already been made, good example is Bad company 2, you can play solo on any computer but when you register the game online you can only play on one account with that game, will there be an option to give over the account details as well or will games like that be limited to new or unregistered?

  • Ronald says: 11 August 2010, 2:23pm

sounds good, like anything I like to wait and see...

  • Jaco says: 11 August 2010, 5:27pm

As long as its not as poorly priced as the Electronic Boutique Pre-owned Range, it'll be a good asset to mightyape.

  • Sanjay says: 11 August 2010, 6:48pm

Sounds awesome, give the person who thought of it a DB.

  • Albert says: 11 August 2010, 7:13pm

    Zillion 2.0?

  • Bronwyn says: 11 August 2010, 10:21pm

What if you had DVDs unwatched / brand new from other sites ie Fishpond? Also what about new bought things from commercial stores ie I brought a New Moon dvd from your site and my parents brought me a copy from the Whitcoulls. Now I've never even opened the case of the dvd from Whitcoulls. Would you allow those kinds of sales or do they all have to be from your site?

  • Adam says: 12 August 2010, 12:15am

Current Trade Me success fee is %6.9 for items up to $150

If Mighty ape puts there fee at around %5, i see this market place idea really working for them

cant wait to see this in action :)

  • Matt from Mighty Ape says: 12 August 2010, 11:16am

@Bronwyn: You won't have to have bought the item from Mighty Ape to sell it on Marketplace. For stuff you've never used, you'll be able to specify the condition of your item as “Like new”.

@Jaco: Since sellers will set their own prices, you can expect some competition-driven pricing.

    @Sanjay: Way ahead of you.

  • Jarrod says: 13 August 2010, 9:11pm

wow sounds like its gonna be good im trying to sell some stuff on trademe now so ive got money to spend on mightyape and its all pc so if i can sell them easier on here you got my promise that i will always use the marketplace for selling my games

  • Evan says: 15 August 2010, 12:53pm

Give us a lil clue on release?? Reminds me of what Amazon has.

  • Shaun says: 24 August 2010, 12:56pm

I dont really sell my games off so this is not really for me...

  • Vijay says: 9 September 2010, 5:43pm

This is a awesome idea for future growth and publicity of the website.....
    Go ahead!!!!

  • Daniel says: 22 September 2010, 8:56pm

I recently started quite a few auctions on TradeMe and would love to speed up the process. One thing I wanted that TradeMe didn't have was an option for 'used but in new condition' (i.e. fulfilling all TradeMe's conditions for 'New' except unused. But even without, I can't wait! Keep the ideas coming monkeys.

  • Simon says: 23 September 2010, 5:43pm

Wow I m in the sooner the better

  • Louella says: 14 December 2010, 2:04pm
