Mighty Ape visit the 2014 Tokyo Game Show!

By Ben

Phew! Tokyo Game Show this year was enough to make your head spin, in a good way! These are truly exciting times to be a gamer.

Mighty Ape were lucky enough to get to attend this years Tokyo Game Show on a business day, which meant we could avoid the crowds and get our monkey mitts on some of the hottest games heading our way soon!

It is hard to know where to begin, so I guess I will just dive right in. First things first, let's talk about The Evil Within (named Psycho Break in Japan). It was EVERYWHERE. Every nook and cranny outside Makuhari Messe (the giant convention centre in Chiba where the Tokyo Game Show is held), as well as everywhere inside too – the marketing budget must be HUGE, which means Bethesda are banking on it being a success. I got my hands on a playable demo at the Sony booth, and can safely say this game deserves to be HUGE. It feels like what Resident Evil should have become – a slick psychological survival horror, not the action laden bullet fest the franchise has become. If you long for the time when survival horror meant just that – surviving the horror, then The Evil Within is for you. You can watch the brand new trailer unveiled at TGS here. The Evil Within is out next month on PC, PS4, Xbox One, PS3 and Xbox 360, so lock in your pre-order, book your time off work, and get ready to scream!

Next up, I have to mention the best looking game of Tokyo Game Show – The Order 1886. I was lucky enough to enter The Order 1886 bunker, complete with replica weapons, and watch a brand new trailer. Talk about intense! Then I got to get my hands on a demo, and I can say without a doubt, The Order 1886 is the BEST looking game on PS4. The level of detail is amazing, and truth be told, I sat there for a while with the controller in my hands waiting for the cut-scene to finish, not realising the gameplay had started. It is THAT good. The Order 1886 is due out early next year, but you can pre-order now (including the stunning The Order 1886 Collector's Edition).

EA had some great games on show this year FIFA 15, Battlefield Hardline, EA Sports UFC… but the real winner was Dragon Age Inquisition. I was privy to a 20 minute play through of a section of the game, and it is looking fantastic. Graphically, it is jaw droppingly stunning, thanks in part to the Frostbite 3 Engine. The demo had a party of different characters fighting their way through an eerie foggy marshland area, and involved switching seamlessly between characters, as well as demonstrating both the more action orientated direct combat and the RPG style tactical combat we all miss from the first game. The map also looks to be absolutely enormous, which is great news for us open world RPG freaks. You can pre-order one of many different editions and receive your copy on November 21 when it releases!

Of course I must mention Metal Gear Solid V Phantom Pain. The more I see of this game, the more over the top and boundary pushing it seems like it will be. Hideo Kojima was there in person to give several different talks throughout the day, as well as unleash a bunch of new gameplay footage. Hideo Kojima also that Metal Gear Solid V Phantom Pain will be infiltrating our homes sometime in 2015. That's a fairly vague release window, but at least it's not 2016! Don't forget to secure your copy!

Speaking of Hideo Kojima, if you are anything like me and OBSESSED with the PT demo AKA Silent Hills interactive reveal, a brand new trailer for the upcoming title has been revealed. It is truly terrifying, and will be a much needed breath of fresh air for long time Silent Hill fans such as myself. Could this mean Silent Hills could be first person, not the traditional third person? Based on how utterly horrifying this trailer is, I hope so! Don't forget to pre-order your copy survival horror fans!

Obviously I can't talk about every amazing game at Tokyo Game Show, or it would become a novel! But here are some new trailers for other games we monkeys here at Mighty Ape are VERY excited about!

Last but certainly not least, my pick for the best game at Tokyo Game Show this year. Of course, it's Bloodborne. Anyone who knows me knows that I am completely obsessed with Hidetaka Miyazaki and Dark Souls. Hidetaka Miyazaki was not directly involved with Dark Souls II as he was toiling away on Bloodborne. I got to spend 30 minutes in the Sony VIP booth slashing my way through the brand new Bloodborne demo, and dying a lot (OF COURSE). Words cannot describe how Bloodborne managed to be utterly beautiful and completely horrific at the same time. The gameplay is very smooth, but more fast paced than the Souls series. Enemies are aggressive, mobs are truly terrifying, and not being able to rely on a shield really ups the pressure. I wouldn't say its less strategic that the Souls games, but perhaps forces you from your comfort zone, of being able to inch your way into areas behind the safety of your shield. I would describe Bloodborne as a more fluid and fast paced Souls game set in utterly nightmarish Victorian world. Graphically, it is truly stunning and is a tremendous step up from Dark Souls 2 (obviously, with it being PS4 exclusive). Also worth getting exciting about is the fact that Bloodborne now has a release date – February 6th! That's only 139 days away (yes, I am counting). Pre-order what is surely going to be THE game of 2015!

Also one last little thing worth mentioning – I got to experience Sony's Project Morpheus, and am absolutely SOLD. I got to run through The Deep demo and it was wonderfully terrifying! We are anxiously waiting a release date so we can get immersed!

We here at Mighty Ape are gamers through and through, just like you. And just like you, we couldn't be more excited about the upcoming releases for the rest of 2014, next year and beyond!
